Ahoy!

Do you ever feel like a negligent parent? I am pretty sure Roo and Jasper's childhood memories will be incomplete without this Pirate Hideaway Treehouse from Posh Tots. Only $18K and it could be ours… it's a relative steal compared to the even more luxurious Red Beard's Revenge Pirate Ship Playhouse, which clocks in at $52K– or a fancy new car for mommy…

If you grow up with one of these in your backyard, what do you wish for? The barre is set pretty high. Media empire? World domination? The sky's the limit.

Motherhood on DVD

***WINNER PICKED 3/14 WITH RANDOM.ORG***

***CONGRATULATIONS, #22 Madonna!!!***

her comment...
Motherhood to me is a full time committment. My most important goal as a parent was that no matter what happened my children would never doubt I loved them.

I love Uma Thurman. I love her even more when she's a schlumpy mess and you can look past her Amazonian beauty and see how totally hilarious she is. Last year's comedy release Motherhood (available today on DVD!) gives Uma a great chance to shine as one of us– a writer turned stay-at-home-mommy blogger. It's especially appropriate to me since the premise involves throwing a birthday party for a soon-to-be six year old girl while wrangling a toddler boy and attempting to maintain sanity while writing 500 words on “What Does Motherhood Mean to Me?”. This character could be me, although I am lucky enough to live in Wichita, where parking spaces are more plentiful than in NYC. And, obviously, I don't look like Uma. Sigh.

To enter and win a copy of Motherhood on DVD, please comment on this post with what motherhood means to you- funny or sentimental.

Entries will be accepted through March 10th and I'll pick the winner using Random.org. US readers are eligible.

1000th Post

I know this should be a milestone marked with something significant but it kind of snuck up on me. I've never been a big believer in auspicious occasions.

I've been thinking a lot lately about how this blog started and where it should go next. I'd love to know what you think. More personal stories? Reviews? Giveaways? Better photos? Gossip? Crafts? Cooking? What makes you stop by? What makes you come back?

Thanks for sharing this with me.

Nowali Moccasin Giveaway

***WINNER PICKED 3/14 WITH RANDOM.ORG***

***CONGRATULATIONS, #30 ReggieMann !!!***

I like the Nowali Spring Flowers Moccasin

There are few reasons to be happy about the seemingly interminable winter, in my book. I am not a big fan of cold weather since we like to be barefoot indoors and our house has bamboo floors set directly on a concrete slab foundation. Chilly! So as much I hate to succumb to winter, it's definitely in our best interest to wear something on our feet this time of year. It's nearly impossible to keep socks or slippers on Jasper and Roo, so I was glad to discover Nowali moccasins which are kind of a hybrid of the two. Roo and Jasper have worn their stripey Nowali moccasins for a year now and they're still in great shape, although they're getting snug.

The new collection of Nowali moccasins are in stock now, and perfect for Easter baskets with cute springtime motifs like hopping frogs and bright flowers and stripes. As usual, I wish they were available in my size! Jasper received a pair of the brown frog moccasins but he was feeling camera shy so Roo agreed to model them for him.

Roo's also wearing the Nowali Heart moccasins, which I totally covet. Seriously, why do kids get all the cuteness?!

Nowali also has adorable and durable tights for little girls and solid colored moccasins for adults, too. I wish they had the Retro Robot moccasins in Jasper's size, he would never try to go barefoot in wintertime again!

To enter and win a pair of moccasins in your choice of style and color (subject to availability), please comment on this post with your favorite pair from the Nowali website.

Entries will be accepted through March 10th and I'll pick the winner using Random.org. US readers are eligible.

Rainbow Brite Is Back!

Not so very long ago, a little girl name Wisp appeared in a colorless and unhappy world. Through courage, kindness and friendship, Wisp became Rainbow Brite and transformed the unhappy world to Rainbow Land, a magical place where all the colors in the universe are created.

Now, Rainbow Brite is one of Rainbow Land’s four Sky Powers, characters whose magical powers determine the cycles of Rainbow Land’s days and seasons. With the help of her friends, her magnificent horse Starlite, and her magical Color Belt and Star Scepter, Rainbow Brite travels to the far corners of the universe, bringing hope and happiness to everyone she meets. No matter where you are, you can always count on Rainbow Brite to make your heart a little lighter and your world a little more colorful!

I remember Rainbow Brite from the '80s as a cheerful little moppet with an optimistic point of view. Hallmark has brought her back for Roo's generation, but with a sleeker, more "tween" look. Still sporting those flashy moonboots and perky topknot, though! I love the bright colors and happy message. The new dolls and accompanying ponies look pretty cute, too.

Disclosure: We received a CD featuring Rainbow Brite games and activities and extra copies to share with Roo's friends. You can play some free Rainbow Brite games online, too.

Leapfrog Math Tips

Lionsgate Home Entertainment is "counting" down to the February 23rd release of the LeapFrog: MATH ADVENTURE TO THE MOON DVD by offering up Math Tips aimed at easing a child’s fear of math and making learning fun. I am posting them in the hopes that Roo and Jasper don't fall victim to the math-phobia that I experienced as a kid…

TIP #1: Math is everywhere!
Next time you're in a waiting room with your child, scan the room (or the magazines on the tables) for evidence of "math." Advise your child to find as much math as possible, and you can give clues if you need to. Numbers, patterns, shapes, categories, and measuring devices (e.g., ruler, scales), are just a few examples of some of the math you might see all around you!

TIP #2: Patterns and Codes are All Around Us!
Make patterns using standard household objects. For example line up repeated objects--sock, stuffed animal, sock, stuffed animal, and so on. Next, ask your child to continue the pattern to figure out the "secret code." You can vary the difficulty of the pattern to suit your child's ability--banana, banana, pear, banana, banana, pear. You can also make deliberate errors that your child needs to find--pear, apple, bananna, pear, apple, banana, pear, pear, banana.

TIP #3: Play the Sorting Game!
Take a deck of cards, and discuss with your child all the ways you can sort the cards. They can be sorted by color (red versus black), suit (spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs), numbers (2's, 3's, etc.), royalty versus numbers (jacks, queens, and kings versus the numbers), odd versus even numbers, etc. Sky is the limit! You can play the sorting game with many collections of things around the house, such as socks and building blocks.

TIP #4: Since It’s the Weekend -- Make it a game night!

Playing number-related, age-appropriate board games, such as Chutes and Ladders, can help support many math-related skills. For an important twist, help your child practice saying each number he or she lands on and passes by with each roll of the dice. For example, if your child is on 23 and rolls a four, help him or her say "24, 25, 26, 27" instead of "1, 2, 3, 4." This way, your child can learn about order and magnitude (i.e., how large or small a number is in relation to other numbers).

TIP #5: Count-down for Launch!

You and Your Kids can pretend to be rocket ships set for launch. Practice counting down to blast-off! You can make the challenge as easy or difficult as you want remembering that you don't have to start counting down from 10. You and your kids can count down by ones (e.g., 17, 16, 15, 14…) or Practice counting by 2's (e.g., 25, 23, 21, 19…)! For advanced math students, try multiples (e.g., 21, 18, 15, 12...)!

Disclosure: I have not received any compensation for this post but I will receive a copy of the DVD.

Disney Wrap-up (family photos)

Both kids had a great time but it was interesting to see the differences in the way they reacted to things. Jasper bought some Star Wars action figures in the Star Tours gift shop and when we ended up back at the Character Spot at Epcot, he insisted on showing them to each and every Disney character and posing with it for photos. It was pretty hilarious because he took it very seriously. Roo, meanwhile, had been carrying around a note for Mickey the whole trip and was impressed because he stuck it into his shoe. "He doesn't have pockets, mommy!"

Roo loved Kristin's daughter Kai! They were instant best pals. So sweet.

I think we could move into the Toy Story area at Disney Hollywood Studios and the kids would be pretty content. Me, too! (Aside from the overabundance of cheerleaders due to a convention. Yikes.)

Both kids declared It's A Small World to be their favorite. My mom is so proud!

Disney Wrap-up

Wow, where to even begin? The Social Media Moms Celebration at Walt Disney World (sponsored by 5 Minutes for Mom, Walt Disney World, Resourceful Mommy Media, Mom Bloggers Club and Mom Select) far and away exceeded my expectations. Especially considering the uncooperative weather conditions!

I knew the conference was a great deal* and jumped on it but I wasn't expecting the presentations to be as engaging and even inspiring as they were. And funny! Seriously funny. There was so much packed in to three short days- I wish we could have spent a week there with everyone. Maybe then I would have managed to mingle more among my bloggy peers. As it was, I missed meeting quite a few people who I genuinely wanted to visit with and was forced to truncate some conversations to chase after the kiddos. Still, I did get to spend some time with plenty of great bloggers and put faces to profile pics.

The Disney Polynesian Resort is beautiful, kind of a Disneyfied version of Hawaiian hotels. The kids got a big kick out of all the staff saying "aloha" all the time. Even with the dismal weather, it was warm and inviting. I would have liked to see the volcano pool in action.

At least the ducks got some use out of the swimming pool… I wish I'd taken some pictures of the room but I somehow missed that. It had two queen beds and lovely furniture. Nice bedding and H20 Aquatics amenities. (The only bad thing was the insanely loud flush on the toilet. It was truly deafening!) The Polynesian is right on the monorail line to Epcot and the Magic Kingdom, making it very convenient to get around without having a car to deal with.

Guy Kawasaki presided over a breakfast and gave a Twitter demo that had everyone laughing AND taking notes.

We were whisked off to the unveiling of the world's largest canned food structure, in celebration of Volunteer Day and the Give a Day, Get a Disney Day program. Ty Pennington was in the house, as well as the unbelievably hot in real life Carter Osterhouse. (I can't believe I didn't take a picture of him, I know.)

Other celebrities were present, too, including Duff (the MTV VJ from waaaaay back when I actually watched MTV) and Neil Bush. There were also several Disney stars including the Zeke and Luther guys, Demi Lovato and, yes, a Jonas brother. Joe, to be specific. They all lent a hand planting trees and loading trucks. Later that night, we were treated to an outdoor party at Epcot catered by Robert Irvine, the Dinner: Impossible chef.

Jasper was thrilled because they gave out glow sticks that looked like tiny lightsabers and he found someone to spar with.

Roo was excited because All Star Weekend played and "the green jacket boy singing is kind of handsome…"

Friday was the all-day conference and it started off with a social breakfast. There were two Disney cast members who flitted from table to table, pretending to be "social media moms" with smartphones in hand. Amusing but a little much for me that early in the morning! The first speaker was Maxine Clark, the "Chief Executive Bear" of Build-a-Bear Workshop. She was absolutely fascinating, with a compelling story of how love can be the central theme of your entrepreneurial spirit. Amazing.

I have never been to one of her stores but I suspect that we will be visiting one soon, just because I liked her so much. Even Chris Brogan had to probe her brain:

Marissa Jaret Winokur, Tony winner for Hairspray, was also very inspiring. (And almost unrecognizable as a blonde!) Her stories about being a mom in Hollywood had everyone cracking up.

I don't usually go in for the me-with-celeb photo thing but she was so much fun, I thought it might rub off…

Oh, look who else popped in! There were raffle drawings throughout Friday's presentations and the biggest prize was an overnight stay in Cinderella's castle. Whoa.

Kathy Ireland was perhaps more beautiful than she was in the '80s and her story about building her lifestyle brand was remarkable, especially in light of an almost-catastrophic bankruptcy. Her compassion is so contagious, she makes you want to be a better person!

I really wanted Chris Brogan to talk for much, much longer. I see why everyone says he's one to watch now. He had so much to say about engagement and community, and he said it with empathy and humor. He made me want to be a better blogger, for real.

Last, but not least, Mary Ellen Hooper treated us to some stand up comedy with a decidedly mommy bent. Love her! She was hilarious, even if everything she said was absolutely true.

I was totally surprised that I didn't want the conference panels to end! All of the speakers were interesting and astute and I wanted to know more about each of them. I was so pleased to have a new outlook on social media and the role of the mom blogger. Now I just need to figure out where I fit in.

*Disclosure: I paid the nominal registration fee to attend the conference with my family but it was a drastically discounted price compared to normal resort lodging and park pass costs. We received plenty of perks from WDW including meals and gifts, along with a media Fast Pass that was a total godsend. Nonetheless, I was not asked to write about this event or any of the theme parks. I just kinda thought you might like to hear about it so you could sign up to be notified if when they do it again…
