Obama Nation

There is a surge of excitement in this country that I hope continues to build over the next four years. I never thought I would live to see a black President but even more unlikely and thrilling to me is seeing a Hawaiian in the highest office in the nation! I never expected to see my alma mater's marching band leading off the inaugural parade. Or to see the Prez saying "howzit" while his whole family gives shaka…

Growing up on an island where almost everyone is a mix of races forces you to be more tolerant, to try and find common ground. I have always thought the world would be a better place if there was more kamaaina spirit across the globe. Sure, you still make fun of other ethnic groups, but everyone eats everyone else's food and takes the best parts of each culture as their own. Perfect.

There is a great New York Times article that breaks down the multi-racial background of both the President and the First Lady and shows what a patchwork of ethnicities and faiths they come from. I find that incredibly inspiring. The melting pot is actually in the White House!

  2. Well said. One of the best things about the US is the ability to assimilate cultures while building onto the cultural core of the country.

  3. I still find it so awesome how the Obamas themselves are a melting pot. They're perfect representatives for our country.
