I love Keanu Reeves. I mean, he's made some clunkers over the years but it's hard not to like the guy. From River's Edge through The Matrix, he's managed to stay pretty true to himself. Smart, if not always eloquent, brooding loner type. If I were to pick a male actor to portray me, it would probably be him. Not that anyone has ever asked…
Anyhow, from what I gather, Keanu is quite a scholar of film. I was excited to hear that he was making 47 Ronin. It's a very popular legend in Japan and I assumed this would be a remake of the classic 1962 film of the same name. It's not. There is definitely some license taken with this retelling, including supernatural forces and way more explosions.
Keanu's character is a hapa outcast who joins the erstwhile Ronin to avenge their master after he is wrongfully obliged to commit seppuku. The art direction and costuming is pretty amazing and the swirly silk robes flying everywhere are dazzling. Keanu broods and fights foes admirably, including a mythical beast that looks like Miyazaki's Spirit of the Forest.
47 Ronin is available now on Digital HD, as well as Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray Combo Packs, DVD, including UltraViolet and On Demand, from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
