Wrapper's Delight.
Steph from Adventures in Babywearing is having yet another great contest. This one could score you a Moby Wrap from Super Momz. As usual, I can't give you any advice on how to use it but those who have mastered the wrapping technique swear by it. I'd definitely give it a try. Go sign the Mr. Linky before Monday night.

Boden, baby!
Boden, fine British purveyor of cottony clothing goodness for the whole family now has an extended range of baby goods! Just in time for Jasper's due date!!! Plus, if you pre-order (for delivery in early August), from the preview site, you will receive 20% off PLUS free shipping and returns. Woo! Here's what I'm eyeing, since I don't think I should subject Jasper to Roo's old pink snowsuit this winter…

Or there's this pirate option:

And, obviously, if I'm going to order stuff for Jasper, I really ought to get Roo something since she NEEDS more clothes. This tee cracks me up. Freshly glazed!

And I just love this one. The pants might make up for the pair with star knees I didn't buy and have been regretting ever since. Maybe. (If anyone has an outgrown pair of those in 2/3 or 3/4, by the way, I would definitely be interested...)

I read about the Baby Boden preview on My Mom Shops this morning. She also has a giveaway for a cute customized tee shirt from Alex & Jett running, so you'll want to check that out.

Pet Cemetary
We lost another cat this weekend to our neighbors' dogs. This is messed up in many ways, starting with the fact that our neighbors are very cool and animal lovers like we are, who rescued the dogs from being euthanized at a shelter but haven't been able to find new homes for them. Possibly because they kill cats. In any case, we have no legal recourse because our cats have all been killed in their yard. We put up a giant, expensive fence but that doesn't keep them in. And staying inside all the time makes them miserable. They like to sleep indoors and wander outside during the daytime. Unfortunately, they also like to court danger by going into the yard of killer dogs. I should also say that our neighbors have four other dogs whom I would classify as pets who would not harm any creature. They also have a couple of cats. But the rescue dogs have to be kenneled to keep them from fighting and killing. Great.
The latest casualty was Claws, one of the semi-feral cats that we'd rescued and neutered last summer and hoped we could provide a long, happy life for. I am embarrassed to say that I don't even have a picture to post of Claws even though he lived with us for almost a year. He had really come around recently and was sleeping inside at night and not making me pretend not to see him when he'd go in or out the patio door. He actually looked a lot like Ming, who was about the same age (a little over a year) as Claws when he died. Here is a picture of Ming, I think taken the day before he was mauled by the dogs.

Ming was killed shortly after our beloved Lum. She was Bob's sweetheart, an 8 year old cat whose loss predicated the whole trapping-strays-to-get-'em-fixed scenario. She was a really great cat, even though she was very bossy. When she died, we had an 8-foot high wooden fence put around our entire property. Bob's spent the last couple of days trying to attach chicken wire to the tops and bottoms of the fence to try and keep our cats in our yard. I have no idea why they keep going into killer dog land. I wish I knew. Here are a couple of pics of Lum Lum mommying Ming when he was a kitten.

Holly looked like a cross between Lum and Piewackett, my oldest cat (and first pet– 14 this year and perched on my desk as I type this). She was feisty and beautiful. I suppose the fact that all of the cats who have succumbed to the neighbor dogs were the ballsiest probably had something to do with their demise.

This last photo has Ming in the center, throttling Dora. I include it because you can understand what a void he leaves for his brothers. We found the three of them in my mom's generator and they have always thought of me and Bob as their parents. They are typical brothers, always wrestling and arguing and sleeping in a gigantic orange pile of cat. Fluffy and Rex are still with us but Ming's absence is so sad for them. They definitely miss him still. They had taken to Claws as a surrogate brother but now they've lost him, too.

RIP little kitties, buried in our yard under a holly tree. We will miss you.
And for those of you keeping track, we still have seven cats. Yes, we are those crazy cat people.

Ring-sling-a-ling
I must admit a slight fear of ring slings. I've used a front carrier with Roo and a pouch sling but being the kind of girl who can never figure out how to wear a shawl definitely makes the concept of a ring sling with its voluminous yardage hard for me to imagine. Still, I think they look pretty cool on women who can actually pull the things off.
For example, Steph from Adventures in Babywearing, who manages to not only look like she knows how to properly tote a baby, but also looks pretty cute doing so. She is hosting yet another super giveaway, this one for a summery cool Solarveil ring sling of your choice by KimzKreations. Sign the Mr. Linky here and post a comment, try your luck!
If I win, I will try not to saddle Jasper with any weird harness/bondage issues.

Squirrelly
I pretty much love everything at Mahar Dry Goods, which features art-oriented kids' stuff, kind of like a finely narrowed down selection from the coolest crafts fair ever. (I've been trying to pimp Bob's wooden toys and dolls to them but he apparently has a master plan for them that he won't let me in on.) Anyway, check out the stunningly adorable loungewear set that showed up there recently:

I love squirrels. I am not sure if they even exist in Hawaii, where I grew up. All of the palm trees have metal rings on them to prevent rats from climbing up and disturbing coconuts, but I don't think there were any squirrels. There are definitely no snakes but oddly I am not half as charmed by them.

Before we came up with Roo, Bob was pushing pretty hard for Squirrel as her middle name, so I have a soft spot in my heart for the li'l woodland creatures. Plus we feed a tiny army of them who hang out on our porch with our cats all day. They like to bitch us out and throw nuts at us.

I love the faux bois ("fake wood," I learned that from Martha Stewart, thank you very much) fabric, too. Campy in the most literal sense. And I am nothing if not literal!

Jasper Hearts who?
Mum's the Wurd is having a contest that I found especially exciting since it introduced me to a groovy baby/kid outfitter called Jasper Hearts Wren. While I obviously think it ought to be called "Jasper hearts Roo" after my future baby and current toddler, it is pretty darned awesomely cute.
Appliqued onesies, tees and tanks, headbands and burp cloth sets... all sorts of ways to adorn your own munchkin. Here is the tank you can win in the contest, simply by signing the Mr. Linky and commenting:

And here is the burp cloth and bib set that someone really ought to send our Jasper. Hint, hint…

My Royal Heinie giveaway
Adventures in Babywearing is having yet another super cool contest. The prize for this one is a My Royal Heinie diaper clutch bag in the Key West style, courtesy of generous online retailer Stroller Mama.

What's especially great about the My Royal Heinie clutch versus other brands is that it features a built-in wipe dispenser pocket, for quick access. I love that idea! Simple but brilliant. Gotta love the red/camo Hot Lips colorway, too…

Kangaroodle?
Sophistishe, a non-mommy blog run by a woman named Sheena (sounds like She-Ra, so she is obviously cool), is having a contest for a $50 gift certificate to online baby and kids' stuff retailer Kangaroodle. Obviously, I love the name of the site, since it combines Roo's name and cockadoodle…but they also have a lot of great things to peruse.
Since I am stingy, I like to look at sites' sale sections first. Here are my hot picks from Kangaroodle, a high chair seat cushion marked down to $14.99 that would fit our old wooden Ikea highchair:

And wrist/ankle bells (in blue only) on sale for $1.75! Jingle jangle!!!

Enter your name on the Mr. Linky at Sophistishe and if you have a blog, link back to their contest and Kangaroodle to win.

What Are You Hiding Under Your Sk*rt?
Oddly, this thing is usually under my skirt these days. She's three going on thirteen, folks. How grown up does she look with her badass dinosaur tattoo?
Of course, I even think she's cute when she's hiding under the empire waists of my vast maternity skirts, which seems way more common nowadays than when she was a baby. I think she's doing some pre-baby-brother regressing. Just be glad I don't have pictures of her crawling around under my dress at the baby shower, trying to mummify herself or trying to coerce me into letting her nurse. Yikes.

The title of this post derives from another Parent Bloggers Network contest, this one in support of Sk*rt, the new online hub for women. If you register at Sk*rt and vote for my post here, I could win a plethora of cool things, including a swanky necklace and a caped shirt for Roo. Go on, it's absolutely free and only a wee bit addictive…If not, no biggie. I still think Roo looks pretty cute hanging out with her horsie.
If you want to try your luck at being less literal with whatever you're hiding under your skirt, post away. Here's the link on PBN.

Iron-on, baby!
This is the cutest baby shower gift, ever! Meyamo gives onesies– umm, I mean snap-bottomed tee shirts that may or may not be affiliated with the Gerber brand– a cool DIY twist.

A soft white cotton snap tee with contrast edging in your choice of boyish blue, princessy pink or gender-neutral green comes in a sweet little organza pouch that also contains two sheets of adorable fuzzy iron-on alphabet letters. Some of them are plain lower case letters but others have morphed into cute little animals or symbols, waiting for you to choose the perfect name or phrase for your little munchkin.

I got a set for Jasper but ended up with enough letters left over to embellish a shirt for big sister Roo, too.

I wish the iron-ons were available separately and in bigger sizes or different themes for grown-ups, too. This could definitely be addictive! It's one of the rare things that could find me with an iron in my hand, that's for sure…

Seonna Hong Gocco print
I got this in the mail, a Seonna Hong Gocco print which is pretty much as close as I'm going to get to one of her original paintings anytime in the near future. It's only the size of a postcard but is super cute and will look great framed next to the other one I bought a couple of years ago.

Here are the details, contact Oliver Kamm/5BE Gallery if you're interested in obtaining one of your own:
Self-Defeating, 2007
Four color silk-screen Gocco print
4 x 5 5/8 inches
$100
This is the original painting that shares its theme and title with the print, from Seonna's recent exhibit in NYC. It's about six times the size of the li'l Gocco print…

Toy review: Dado Cubes

Dado Cubes are a toy you won't mind leaving out in the living room. Each set contains 10 hollow plastic squares that are notched and can be assembled in endless configurations. They are sleek and gorgeous to look at and come in two remarkably inoffensive (for kids' toys!) color combinations. You can choose a subdued but not quite pastel multicolor original set or the new moody blue set.

Ours came while I was not home but of course Daddy and Roo opened it without me and threw away the box it came in, which would have been handy for storage since the Dado Cubes have no bottoms. Roo immediately ordained it a castle and dungeon for her She-Ra toys and Polly Pockets, which was highly amusing. She was more interested in filling the cubes with other stuff than in building the cubes up, which leads me to believe this toy might be more appropriate for older kids or those who already like to play with blocks. Like her father, for instance, who liked the concept but decided you would need an additional set or two to make it really, really fun.
The corners are pointy (like Legos) so I wouldn't suggest this for kids much younger than 3 or 4. I think kindergarten aged kids would really be into Dado Cubes and would have the patience and coordination to make good use out of them. Until Roo gets a bit older, we will be using ours mostly as modular housing for dolls and other toys. Actually, I think they would also make nice placeholders for a mod dinner party or a swanky photo display stand. Hmm. I might borrow them for a while, myself...

Fancy!
Roo LOOOOVES her new party dress. I got it at Hannah Banana, my favorite local consignment shop. I was afraid it might be a little too fluffy for her but when I showed it to her, she actually covered her face and blushed! Obviously, it makes her feel like a princess... she's wearing it to our baby shower next week. And then probably every day until it's shredded to pieces...

Carry that load
Adventures in Babywearing is sponsoring another great giveaway. This one caught my eye because of its title: For Your Little Roo...although if I won, it would be more for my little Jasper, since Roo is over the 30 lbs mark at this point and I just don't feel like toting her around.
The prize is a $75 gift certificate to MamaKanga, which can be used for any number of cool baby toting products or accessories. I am a bit reticent about the ring slings and wraps, which seem complicated and overwhelming for a 5'2" person (at least this one), but the pouch slings are great. I actually like them better than the harness-styled front carriers, probably because I'm so short and, uh, busty. Plus, they fold down to nothing in your diaper bag and could be used as a makeshift changing pad or burp cloth if need be.

Look how cute this HotSlings Zoie pouch is. You can also get a matching pocket for your money and keys:

I am also partial to the BabyLegs leg warmers and the Bink Link pacifier clips which I would use for securing toys since Roo wasn't a binky baby and I am hoping Jasper won't be, either. Anyway, contest runs through Friday. All you have to do is link to Adventures in Babywearing (sign the Mr. Linky there) and MamaKanga and hypothesize on what you'd be buying with a $75 gift certificate. Good luck!

Swimmeroo
At the orientation before Roo's first swim class last Monday, parents were told it would take about four days before our kids would be able to go straight to lessons without sobbing. I thought it was an exaggeration, but it really was true. For the first couple of days, it was horrible. Roo talked glowingly about her swimming lessons, even telling her new preschool teacher about what she is learning, but upon arrival, she would start to cry and say she didn't want to go. Her little body would convulse in sobs. Absolutely heartwrenching, especially with my 32 week pregnant hormones raging. (I suspect there is also a link between spending 40 minutes a day in the hottest place on earth and my swollen ankles, but that's another story.) Obviously there's a reason parents are sequestered behind a wall and can only catch glimpses of the little ones being dunked and trained to reach for the sides of the pool...

From my spy parent vantage point, I could see that Roo was not only not crying, but she was actually listening to the instructor. And trying to console the other kid, who was still bawling. Doing arm strokes and practicing kicks and blowing bubbles. Being dunked and not freaking out.

By Thursday, she didn't even put up a fight when we got to swim class. She gamely went to the instructor without even looking back. In the pool, she practiced turning her head to the side to breathe and paddled like a little frog. She leaped into the pool like a tiny Jacques Cousteau! Later, she even donned her swim gear to show grandpa when he stopped by after work. She demanded her fins and goggles in the bathtub and showed me some of the teaching rhymes her instructor uses: "heel, toe, snap together!" over and over again...

I'm so proud of my big mermaid girl!

Paper Bag Princess
Sorry for the absence of posting this week. Roo started preschool four mornings a week in a new classroom, with a new teacher, followed by swim lessons. It's been a busy, busy week here at the old homestead. This coincides with the weather getting unbearably hot (94ยบ right now and balmy) and my introduction to the glories of ankle swelling, which I was miraculously spared from during my last pregnancy. I had no idea my ankles could get so, uh, round.
Anyway, Bob and I hit a couple of yard sales between preschool drop-off and swim class. A couple of He-man bad guys for Roo's collection, some clothes, a post hole digger, assorted files and a trunkful of Pyrex ware. Woo-hoo, I am so set to be the queen of casseroles. Feel free to send me your recipes, I am feeling super freezer-friendly these days since it's too hot to actually cook over the stove.
My favorite purchase today was this book for a quarter:

I am sure many of you have heard of this already, since it does have the air of an instant classic, but I don't remember it from my youth. (I know I am older than the hills but it lists the publish date as 1980, so it should have been in libraries when I was still in elementary school...) I was totally blown away by how cool it was when I read it to Roo pre-nap. I bought it because it had a dragon on it but was amused by its premise. The dragon burns down the princess' castle, including all her fancy schmancy clothes, and kidnaps her betrothed prince. So she dons a paper bag (the only unscorched thing she could find) and sets out to rescue him. Bla bla bla, she tricks the dragon, saves the prince only to have him criticize her slovenly appearance. So she dumps him. End of story. How cool is that?!

Happy day of rest, everyone!
I found this on MetroDad and am still weirded out by it: Armor of God PJs for your fearful but devout little soul. Yikes.

I'm all for whatever works for you (religion, politics, sexual preference), but if your 4-8 year old has to wear these because they're scared of bedtime, I think there might be other things to worry about besides the devil…
