her comment: we would love this thanks for such a great contest.
Picaflor is the spanish word for hummingbird. It is also the name of a Portland-based children's clothing line that specializes in rayon knits. Did you know that rayon is an all-natural fiber, derived from wood pulp? Well, it is. Handknit by Peruvian artisans, it is also blissfully silky-smooth and soft, with a subtle sheen.
Picaflor is as improbable and fluttery as its namesake. For a knitwear line, their collection is light and summery. Their designs are classically elegant, almost old-fashioned, but in eye-catching colors that are witty and bright. Picaflor clothes look fancy-schmancy, but they are imminently wearable, and perhaps more important to mom– imminently machine washable and dryable!
We received two Picaflor outfits to review. The Julia dress in hot pink/orange is Roo's favorite. It's breezy and pretty, slightly ethnic, perfect for summer. I would also love to see it over jeans and a turtleneck next fall. It's also available in avocado/mint and turquoise/mint versions. It's a 5 and she needs to grow a bit to fill it out properly, but I imagine that it will fit perfectly by summer's end. (The Anya shoes were also sent for review, from Picaflor's sister company, Eleven. More on that later…)
Jasper received the Apollo set in a rather dashing olive/sky blue stripe. This outfit is so adorable that I spent most of the day swooning. And I refused to admit that the 12 month size was way too small for El Chunko. He had four inches of diaper sticking out the back, but look how sweet he looked from the front! He looked like a teeny tiny Dapper Japper. Like he was in Buena Vista Social Club or something. Old guys at the farmer's market gave him the thumbs-up. I need to get this in a bigger size, pronto.
Picaflor also makes a lovely layette line that would be great for shower gifts. I am particularly fond of the knit ear caps and striped onesies and pants. Click here to find a retailer near you.
Okay, now for more about the shoes. Eleven is the bigger-sizes sibling of See Kai Run, a company we love. Eleven furthers the quality and style you expect from See Kai Run, offering sizes 9 Toddler -1 Youth. Roo's still at the upper echelon of SKR sizing, but will soon grow into the pink and lime cherry blossomed mary jane goodness of the Eleven Anya shoes we received, so we're keeping 'em. But we also got a snazzy pair of Carlo slip-ons in a size 9 that won't fit Jasper anytime in the near future, so we're offering them to our readers. They are gorgeous– tan and sage nubuck loafers:
