Ace of (Tiny) Cakes

About this time last year, Roo was honing her cupcake decorating skills. Now there's a new contender for toy that all little girls covet: the Girl Gourmet Cake Bakery. It pairs microwaveable cake mixes with a lazy susan-equipped detailing station that features a battery-powered icing pen, along with fondant mixes and miniature cookie cutters to cut shapes out and decorate with.

The Girl Gourmet Cake Bakery also features Duff from Ace of Cakes as a spokesmodel, which I find oddly endearing.

Now, I spend most of my time in the kitchen trying to cut down on time-consuming steps and extra things to wash so I was a little perturbed by how many little pieces had to be released from the rather excessive packaging. But Roo was totally thrilled watching me wrestle with twist ties and vacuum molded plastic inserts and scotch tape, waiting to begin her cake decorating career. I remember lusting after teeny tiny kitchen sets with a zillion and one pieces when I was little, so I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt. Once I washed all the teeny tiny pieces and we got to the mixing and baking stage, Roo was in heaven.

Was she grumbling because there are only two packets of cake mix included or that the fondant didn't set quite right? No way, dude! Just let her have a frosting spatula and a lazy susan and she's in another world…

Was she miffed like anal retentive mommy that we couldn't replicate the smooth and seamless cake stylings pictured on the box? What does it look like, pal? That cake is fancy schmancy!

Do you think she could spend HOURS drizzling icing on stuff? Absolutely.

In fact, she will agree to almost anything (homework, being nice to her brother, etc.) if there are rainbow sprinkles on hand.

Final verdict? Roo LOVES the Girl Gourmet Cake Bakery, even though I think it should include way more cake and fondant mixes for hapless mommies to experiment with, since getting the proper consistencies seemed tricky. I am sure it will be a massive hit come holiday season, although I think the smaller Girl Gourmet Sweets Candy Ring Maker might be easier for girls Roo's age to use themselves.

Our Girl Gourmet Cake Bakery was provided by JAKKS Pacific who also sent us some items from their new Lucky BeeBee line of collectible fashion charms.

I like the mix and match options with these charms and their cutesy Japanese kawaii toy aesthetic. Some of the charms are articulated- for example, the lunchbox charm opens up to reveal a tiny sandwich!

This one reminds me of miss Roo. Sassy!

There are a ton of different charms to choose from and this is only the first Lucky BeeBee series!

  1. What a cute cupcake! And you are so right, that little charm looks as though it was modeled after Miss Roo.

    She got a haircut?

  4. That is sweet (pun intended), and I love her little cake. I had a Holly Hobbie oven as a kid, and that thing was dangerously hot! I used to play with it in my room too, but being the responsible first-born child, I never put un-cakelike things in it (when it was plugged in). Though I too wish it had come with more cake mix.
