I love Seonna Hong

I've been a big fan of Seonna Hong's work for a while (her pop-up book Animus is really great and Roo is finally old enough to handle it without mangling it) and her new exhibit opened last week. It's called Our Endless Numbered Days and is up now at Oliver Kamm/5BE Gallery in NYC.

These paintings are gorgeous, moodier than her more optimistic earlier work. Still lots of cute kids and animals but definitely more somber.

I used to love Hong's paintings because her little girls reminded me of my kid with her dark eyes and peculiar sense of purpose, but then Roo's hair went all curly so she doesn't look so much like them anymore. The girls are in these paintings are absolutely adorable, almost vintage looking but timeless, and the animals are beautiful but strangely foreboding. Even the more abstract paintings without children or animals are pensive. I like the collaged canvas and lush backgrounds. Actually, I like them all.
