Do You Believe in Magic?

Living- In Theory is one of the 50 (!) bloggers participating in the unimaginably generous HP Magic Giveaway promotion. Each blogger has been given an HP prize package worth over $6000 to give away to their readers, in the hopes that they too will pass on a bit of the magic this holiday season. Living– In Theory wants to know what I'm doing to impact the world. Here's what I would do with four new PCs, a printer, media box, etc. if I won:

I am on a non-profit committee working on outfitting the first-ever library for an inner-city K-8 grade school that has been around since the 1940s. It was so hard for me to imagine that the school had existed so long without a standalone library. They had a couple of shelves of very old, very worn books in the back of their gym. We are buying them books, smartboards, computers, furniture, etc. Our committee is also building mini-libraries for two area family shelters and they are not slated to receive computers, so it would be great to be able to provide them with some technology. It would be nice to have some extras to throw in, too, like the printer and MediaSmart Connect.

I would like to keep one of the laptops for myself, probably the Mini. I've only ever used Mac desktops so I would be curious to see how HP/Windows compares.

I'm on a charity roll, folks! I'm wrapping up this blog post so I can drop Jasper off with grandma before heading to Roo's school where I will pick up a gaggle of 5th graders on a field trip to take the donations for our Operation Holiday coat/food drive. I am looking forward to seeing how the kids feel about visiting a distribution center. Hopefully it will be something they remember every holiday season. I wish Roo was old enough to go with us.

  1. Wow, no library at all? That's so sad. Books have been my friend since I was a very young child and I'm thankful that my schools always had a good library. Good luck with the contest!

  7. This is such a great cause. Several years ago, my son started kindergarten at a brand new school--one that didn't have funds for a library. I actively participated in fundraising activities to help them get one established. I want to tell you to shoot for the stars! You can accomplish so much. I look where we are at in our 4th year and marvel how fast it all came together. Today, we not only have a fully stocked library, but we also have an amazing technology system and tools for the children. Once you start working toward a goal and people catch your vision, they will catch the fire within you and amazing things will happen.

Thanks for sharing your amazing post with us. Good luck with the contests and happy holidays!

  11. I now feel completely dense for not even imagining a school without a library. Growing up, my libraries ( school and community) played such a huge role in my life that I am not sure what life would have been like without them. I was working/volunteering in the library as early as 4th grade at school. I am wondering if the Scholastic book company has any programs to help startup libraries?
Best of luck in all of your endeavors, looking forward to hearing how the library shapes up.
