When I was pregnant with Roo, I went to every childbirth class I could find. I was obsessed with being prepared for motherhood and I was especially worried about breastfeeding. The lactation classes freaked me out. All of the different ways to hold the baby while nursing had specific names and were shown in how-to diagrams. The cradle carry, the football hold, the saddle hold. All seemed so beyond me and the constant reassurance that latching on takes time and effort made me positive that breastfeeding was going to be an uphill battle. Luckily, I was totally wrong. Roo latched on easily and effortlessly and my milk came in just fine. She never took a bottle and I barely had to pull out the hand pump I'd registered for.

Jasper, on the other hand, couldn't nurse immediately because he had some breathing issues and was whisked off to the NICU. They kept him on IV feeding for most of that so I was assigned a hospital grade breast pump while I was staying with him. That sucker was amazing and I was dedicated to producing as much milk as I could for my poor sick baby. Who rapidly recovered and turned into the biggest milk hog on the planet. I hadn't really needed a pump with Roo but with Jasper my milk came in so, umm, abundantly, I had to pump pretty much whenever I wasn't actually nursing the baby or risk a torrential downpour. (icky.)

The Evenflo Comfort Select Performance breast pump is an occasional-use pump that would have been perfect for my overflow traffic. It features an auto-cycling vacuum that simulates natural suckling and encourages milk flow; the vacuum is adjustable so you can control the rate of suction for your own comfort. Dual collection means less time spent pumping (and therefore less time being engorged, yay!) and the pump can be plugged in to an AC outlet or run on batteries, although it drains them pretty quickly that way.

Evenflo is teaming up with Mom Central to give away Three Evenflo Comfort Select Performance breast pumps along with some boxes of Evenflo Nursing Pads. Enter to win one at Mom Central or try your luck winning one from me by leaving a comment below!

To enter and win your own Evenflo Comfort Select Performance breast pumps and Evenflo Nursing Pads, please comment on this post with your own breastfeeding stories.

Entries will be accepted through May 6th and I'll pick the winner using Random.org. US readers are eligible. Only one entry/comment per person, please.

  1. I breast fed my daughter and honestly I found pumping one of the hardest things about it. I did not have a good pump and finding time at work was never easy. I think if I had an easier time pumping I would have breastfed longer.

  2. My wife had breast reduction surgery before we had our first child. She pumped to get as much breast milk as she could. It was a miserable experience for her because it took forever and there wasn't much to show for it.

One day her Mom was helping out and thought that the bottle of milk in the fridge was too old to use, so she poured it into the sink. I don't think I have ever seen my wife more depressed.

Anything that makes the process easier is golden in my book. Especially now that our second child is on the way (June 5th!)

  3. With my first daughter, all through my pregnancy, I made big plans, I made plans for labor/delivery and I made plans for breastfeeding. So I was slightly disappointed when none of my plans/dreams came true. Due to some problems after my emergency c/s, I did not get to BF my daughter immediately. When I got to see her for the first time, 9 hours later, the nursery staff had already given her bottles of formula. To make a long story short, she didn't want to nurse. We worked with LLL and LC's galore and no one was able to get her to latch on and nurse. So I pumped. I bought a cheap dual pump at walmart, not knowing any better, and eventually I wasn't able to pump enough for her and had to start using formula. I know that if I had a good pump to start with, I might have been able to EP for her longer. With #2, I was determined to BF -- and I was succesful. I hope that I am able to BF this new baby too and I know a good pump will come in handy

1st son, breastfed 14 or 15 months, pumped till a year when working and 4th month of pregnancy.
2nd son: almost the same story :)
Daughter: 9 months, nursing almost full time, still pumping at work...

  5. My wife is currently breast feeding our daughter... and stressing out because she's not producing enough. She had to go back to work and barely ever gets enough pumping time.

  6. I am dedicated to nursing my first. I hope it is as easy as you found with Roo. I'll also be working, so I know a pump will be a necessity.

  7. When I was younger Breast Feeding was something people did not talk about. I think it is great now that not only is it talked about, but that there are advocates to encourage all mothers that can to breast feed. I want my daughter to be able to breast feed, along with my neice, both who are pregnant - this will sure be a good gift for either one of them. A gift not many people think of giving.

  11. I don't have any stories of my own as I didn't breast feed my son. When I had him, I was working as a cashier and wasn't able to control where I would be at any given moment so I decided to go with bottle feeding. I would like to win this, however, to put in a basket for a surprise baby shower for a friend who could use it. Thank you for the contest!

  15. UGH, breastfeeding stories. Well I can tell you one thing - an industrial pump like the ones you can rent from the hospital will NOT be a regular part of my life this time! I think I might have a bad flashback if I have to hear that sound again.
But an occasional-use pump sounds great!

  18. I breastfed my daughter and she was a preemie, I think the fact she grew strong and healthy is because of Mother's Milk. I plan to do the same with my 2nd!! Thanks for the chance.

  25. I believe in breast feeding not only for health reasons, but because I believe it strengthens the bond between baby and mother. It would definitely be nice to have a pump though with life so hectic!

  45. I can honestly say breastfeeding has done my children a world of good. I have 3 boys ages 11, 7 and 3. I am pregnant with a girl YAY now. I breastfed my 2 oldest and for unforseen reasons i couldn' t do so with my youngest son. The older 2 never get sick...ever!! My youngest does. I believe it has to do with the breastfeeding and immunity!!
