Avalon Bay AB-WINE12S Wine Cooler Review

I received an Avalon Bay Wine Cooler for the purpose of this review. This post was made possible by Mom Spark Media. Thoughts are my own.

This summer has been amazing for the garden but all those organic veggies are really hampering my wine storage in the fridge… I usually like to keep a few bottles at the ready, just in case of emergency, but there is simply no room for any bottles among the bountiful greens, tomatoes, squash, peppers and herbs. Sad story but true.

Obviously, I jumped at the chance to try a wine cooler. (You know, once I realized that they weren't talking about the sweet and delicious wine-ish beverages popular when I was younger. Ahem.) I liked the  sleek look of the Avalon Bay Wine Coolers and thought one might fit in quite nicely in my kitchen. Perhaps giving me an excuse to hoard more wine. Yes!

I received the 12-bottle Avalon Bay Wine Cooler to review, but there is an 18-bottle version, too. It arrived in a double-walled cardboard box, ready to plug in and play. Or cool down some fine vintages, at least.

It's a pretty compact unit, not much bigger than a case of wine, so it is a good size for most kitchens. Our kitchen is not very big but I decided to put the Wine Cooler next to the sink, beside the cupboard that we keep our dishware in. The plain black and brushed steel look of the wine cooler blend in well with our granite countertops and natural wood cabinetry.

See? It doesn't take up much space at all, really. One caveat: the AB-WINE12S is a freestanding wine cooler and should not be placed inside a cabinet or nook because it needs air circulation to perform efficiently. I noticed that the temperature stays more consistent if I pull the unit away from the cabinet slightly so it can breathe. Like any good red wine should. If you are looking for a wine cooler to fit a specific cabinet or niche, you should check out front-venting wine refrigerators.

The sliding wire racks are removable, so you can accommodate other bottles or even, uh, boxes. No judgment! At just 24 lbs, you could even plug it in on the patio to keep some six packs cool at your next BBQ. So many options… 

One thing the AB-WINE12S is not meant for: food. Its cooling range is great for white wines or red but 51-64ºF is not going to keep your leftovers safe for eating. This is a wine cooler, NOT a dorm fridge! Although it would certainly be the coolest dorm fridge ever. And if you stocked it with wine, you would probably be the most popular kid on your floor. I digress.

If you find you need more space for your wine, the AB-WINE12S is an affordable, compact solution.

Dyson Blueprint = Vacuum Love

I liked my old Dyson vacuum cleaner. It was one of the first purchases Bob and I made when we were still living in sin in Memphis, way back in the nineties. Back then, we only had two cats, but it seemed like a prudent purchase. An investment in our future, if you will. It was not cheap (It cost about $500 even way back then!) and it was also uncommon enough for me to have to order it online. It sucked mightily, in a good way, and we loved it instantly. Even though it was unbelievably ugly, decked out in purple and green like Ye Olde Incredible Hulk. Did I mention that the plastic had glitter embedded in it? Some seriously bizarre industrial design choices were made in the creation of this otherwise stealthy and maneuverable floor-cleaning maniac.

That big old Animal served us well through the adoption of eleven cats and birth of two kids, although we chose to keep it hidden away in closets as much as possible. Because of the purple and green, mostly, but also because Bob vacuumed up cat litter with it once and it retained a lingering scent. Anyway, imagine my delight when I was given the opportunity to review the newest Dyson vacuum cleaner, the limited edition DC25 Blueprint model. Yes, screams and giddiness. Pure delight! We had to introduce them, of course:



Not to be shallow, but the younger one is cuter, right? Slimmer, more vivacious, with a little wiggle due to the inclusion of the proprietary ball technology… it's a sexy little thing! Of course, it has awesome suction with very little noise, just like the old one. I also really, really like the quick-release wand, which is MUCH easier to use than its predecessor, once you figure it out. It makes it way more likely that I will actually use the wand tools to clean my air ducts and appliance grates. Seriously. In fact, the combo tool is sort of a crevice sucker and slide-up brush that makes doing the tight spaces a breeze. The narrower, lower-profiled head means that I will vacuum under and around more stuff and the rubbery coating means I won't mess up the moulding, even though realistically I need to repaint the trim one of these days, anyway.



Now, if Dyson could just make it clean the floors automatically, scoop cat poop, walk the dog and change diapers, my life would be perfect…

Clean Up Like A Shark

Last Fall, I was invited to the launch of the Ninja Master Prep kitchen appliance. During the presentation, we were also introduced to another Euro-Pro product line, Shark House Care Solutions. I was impressed with the vacuums and steam appliances we were shown but was curious about how they would perform at home with actual, everyday dirt instead of rice and fake schmutz brought into the otherwise pristine Mandarin Oriental hotel solely for demonstration purposes. I've been testing out the entire suite of Shark House Care Solutions (aside from their line of irons, which would pretty much go to waste in our household and Shark hand vacs, which are reputedly awesome, according to my friend who has three very sheddy dogs) over the last couple of months and overall, I must say that I am very pleased with their performance. I am going to let you know what I thought about each of the products I received, in no particular order of preference.

The Shark Portable Steamer is an incredibly useful little gadget. I was really excited to try it because we have several "problem" areas in our home that I thought it would be particularly great on: the scaly hard water deposits on our glass shower doors and the uneven slate tile in our master bath. It was really impressive on glass and mirrors with the squeegee attachment and the different "steam pocket" attachments clean everything from kitchen appliances and range hoods to counters, cupboards and other large surfaces easily and efficiently without any toxic chemicals.



That's the beauty of this little guy- it does everything solely with the power of steam, no harsh detergents or cleansers needed, so it is very earth friendly and safe for kids. If, like me, you're anti-ironing you can even use your Shark Portable Steamer as a garment steamer. It takes a little practice, but once you get the maneuvers down, it is very quick and easy. My only complaint about this tool is that it comes with a lot of attachments but not a case to store everything in. I'd love to have an easy way to store the steamer and all of its parts in so I don't have to keep it in its original box. I am more likely to use it if I can get to it without a hassle.



Possibly my favorite of all of the items I reviewed, the Shark Steam Pocket Mop also uses the power of steam to clean and sanitize your hard surfaces. The patented 2-sided cleaning "pocket" swivels, allowing you to clean with one side, and sanitize with the other for more efficient cleaning. It comes with three quick-release "pocket" mop heads in different shapes and sizes (rectangle, triangle and extra large open-area rectangle), a carpet glider attachment and four reusable microfiber cloth pads. It's very lightweight and maneuverable, with an extra-long 30' cord, and you can release extra concentrated steam for problem areas by simply pumping the handle. The steam dries quickly and doesn't remain hot enough to harm your curious kids, which was something I was worried about. I absolutely LOVE being able to pull off the dirty pad and toss it into the washer. There's something so satisfying about seeing the grime you've just removed from your floors and being able to eradicate it the washing machine. I was concerned that the pads would tear but they are very durable and secure tightly with heavy duty velcro. As a matter of fact, the Shark Steam Pocket Mop withstood the uneven slate tile that I mentioned before, which usually shreds those pesky disposable mop sheets. Score! Again, though, I wish it came with a storage solution for all of the handy attachments.



The Shark Multivac with Back Saver Wand is kind of like a cleaning Transformer. In fact, Jasper was convinced it was a robot! It can be used as a hand vac, portable canister vacuum or a stick vacuum depending on your need. It has impressive suction and can pick up large particles (Cheerios, et al…), plus it has a turbo brush attachment on board that is great for pet hair. The Shark Multivac with Back Saver Wand can also get into just about any crevice or corner depending on how you configure it. I think it would be an amazing vacuum for someone who wants to switch it back and forth with all of the different configurations but, honestly, it was a bit unwieldy for me.



The Shark Navigator is a really good mid-priced (around $200) vacuum cleaner. It is lightweight and easy to maneuver and performs well on rugs and bare floors. It comes with a 24 inch crevice tool for tight spaces, Power Nozzle and additional Turbo Power Brush, plus the super-stretch hose with quick release wand that provides 12 feet of cleaning reach. I really like that it is a bagless vacuum and its lifetime filters just need to be rinsed twice a year. The Shark Navigator also carries a 5 year warranty. It's a good, sturdy, all-purpose machine.



The Shark StickVac can be used as both a stick and hand vacuum. It's great for everyday maintenance of carpets and bare floors, since it is powered by a rechargeable battery you can use it anywhere in the house. I found it especially useful for vacuuming our very steep hardwood stairs, which are a pain to clean with a traditional vacuum cleaner. It's also convenient for quick clean-up of kid messes at mealtime or after crafts. I really like how maneuverable it is, with its swivel steering, and it even has a telescoping handle should you want to put your kids to work. Only slightly kidding. It is lightweight enough for my five year old daughter to use! I wish that the Shark StickVac had some kind of integrated battery charger or maybe a wall mount to keep it at your disposal. It would also be great if it shipped with two batteries instead of one… then you could do the whole house! With one battery, it only lasts for a couple of rooms, tops. Of course, if you're really planning on vacuuming in earnest, I suppose you should just pull out the "real" vacuum like the Shark Navigator…

Putting the Ninja to Work

I know some of you have been waiting to hear more about the Ninja Master Prep that I was lucky enough to be whisked away to NYC to see being demonstrated this time last month. I received a truckload of boxes from Euro-Pro a couple of weeks ago and have been slowly but surely trying everything out so I can tell you about the products from my own point of view. I had kind of hoped everything would trickle in over a couple of months but instead I received three vacuum cleaners, two steamers and, of course, the Ninja Master Prep all at once! I was a bit overwhelmed initially but I have finally gotten the chance to use everything so I will write up my thoughts soon.

First off, the Ninja Master Prep. We've used it several times already to make pesto (using the end-of-season garden basil) and salsa verde (using the end-of-season garden tomatillos and tomatoes). I finally remembered to take some pictures while using it to make zucchini/banana muffins for Roo's class. (I am on the healthy snack committee and the kids especially like home-baked goods, even if we use whole grains and less sugar!)

If you're like me, you are probably wondering why it's called the Ninja. After using it at home several times, I think I know. Witness the twin blades of doom:



These things are razor sharp and come apart from the shaft for easy cleaning. I think they look a bit like ninja throwing stars when they're assembled and they certainly do their job efficiently. The zucchini from our garden didn't stand a chance when pitted against the Ninja Master Prep:



Nor did these walnuts:



In fact, when you're using the Ninja Master Prep, you have to be careful to use short pulses instead of pushing down on the button because it will completely pulverize whatever you put into it within a few short seconds. Since I didn't want walnut meal, I only pulsed once or twice.



One of the things that I especially like about the Ninja Master Prep is that the motor is housed in a unit that you attach to the tops of the chopping containers. It does not power on unless the lids are locked and everything is in its place, which is comforting since the blades are incredibly sharp. I haven't been a victim of the Ninja yet but Bob managed to slice his hand a bit, I think when he was pulling the blades out to rinse. You'd think he'd know better than to mess with a Ninja!



The Ninja Master Prep made the zucchini totally disappear into lovely moist muffins. I peeled them before chopping so there wouldn't be any sign for the green-phobic six and under set. See? They just look like normal banana-walnut muffins:



I like the versatility that the Ninja Master Prep offers with its two cup bowl and 48 oz pitcher. Having two containers that you can attach the motor unit to means you can work on different items at the same time without stopping to wash and dry vessels. The pitcher has a hinged spout lid which is nice because it can vent when you're blending hot things. It's hard to beat the Ninja's ease of cleaning since the blade assembly comes out and apart for hand or machine dishwashing. I also like the fact that it comes with storage lids that you can pop off if you decide not to use everything all at once. Replacement parts are readily available, so you could also stock up on extra bowls or pitchers if you do a lot of chopping and blending. The price is also pretty reasonable: $59.85, including shipping.

Disclosure: I received a Ninja Master Prep to try out and my flight and one night of hotel accomodations were paid for during the NYC launch event. However, Euro-Pro has not asked me to write this review and has nothing to do with my opinions. If the Ninja sucked, I would say so.

The Heart of Our Home

The heart of our home is our kitchen which is open through to the den/TV room. I would say we spend 90% of our time between these two rooms, cooking and eating and watching TV. These rooms are the backdrops for spontaneous dancing, singalongs, lectures, kitty wrangling… all the stuff from modern life! Frightening, isn't it? The amount of… stuff. Jasper is standing in-between the kitchen and den in this picture, either asking for candy from the high shelf or for his favorite TV show to be turned on. Okay, it's more like he's demanding something. Welcome to my world, ruled by a two year old dictator and his five year old evil queen.

Ninja Trip

This time next week I'll be in New York City at the rawther fabulous Mandarin Oriental for an introduction to the Ninja Master Prep, a revolutionary kitchen appliance from global lifestyle brand Euro-Pro (the makers of the popular Shark line of vacuum and steam cleaners).

It might be overcast this morning but by afternoon it should be sunny and pushing 100º… Summer is in full effect, whether I like it or not. I'm not a hot weather girl, never have been. My hair frizzes, I sweat, I hate wearing shorts. Things I do love about summer? Fresh fruit, ice cream and tall, cool drinks. I hereby declare it Smoothie Season!

Hamilton Beach, one of the most trusted name in small kitchen appliances (and the title of an awesome instrumental surf rock tune by my beloved Satan's Pilgrims) has a great range of blenders that are just begging to whip up some smoothies this summer. Frigidaire Five Things

I knew I was getting old when I started to get more excited about appliances than handbags. Sure, I might covet the latest Gustto purse (and somewhere fancy to schlep it…), but what I could really use is a large capacity washer and dryer. It seems like I am forever washing and drying and folding and putting away laundry. It would be nice to just get it over with in one fell swoop and have more time devoted to other things.

Walmart is celebrating Earth Month by helping shoppers "save & live green" with a special eco-focused section of their website. Consumers can educate themselves with informative articles and tips, share advice with the Walmart community and, of course, shop smarter AND greener! There is also an accompanying Walmart Earth Month YouTube Channel, where you can view money and earth-saving strategies from the Elevenmoms.

As a member of the ever-growing More Than Elevenmoms splinter group, I received several products from Walmart's Earth-Friendly Housewares and Earth-Friendly Appliances selection to review. I've written about the Clorox Greenworks line before so I knew that I would love the Green Works Natural Dishwashing Liquid and Green Works All Purpose Cleaner Spray. These products work just as well as traditional cleansers but they are 99% natural and biodegradable, with no fumes or chemical residues. This Earth Month factoid really strikes a chord with me: If every Walmart shopper bought one canister of Green Works™ natural biodegradable cleaning wipes, we could keep 12 million pounds of petroleum-based plastic from being produced*. Plus, I love the fact that they're compostable so keeping the counters tidy doesn't mean throwing endless paper towels into the landfills.



I also received a jug of Tide Coldwater. I already prefer washing my laundry in cold water and I do use Tide so this is a great product for me. It's been specially formulated to wash better in cold water, which saves energy and potentially a little money on your heating bills: If every Walmart customer switched to washing in cold water with Tide® Coldwater for 50 loads, we could save nearly $4 billion and 39 billion kilowatt-hours of energy*.



The Brita Riviera Digital Pitcher is an updated version of the filter pitcher I came to know and love in college. It has an electronic filter change indicator that reminds you when to change the filter so you have clean, odor-free drinking water. This is really a great thing in a town like Wichita that tends to have stinky tap water! And if you pair it with a reusable cup or container, you save the waste from buying bottled water: If all 200 million Walmart customers used filtered water, we could keep billions of plastic bottles out of our landfills*.



The last thing I reviewed was a Bissell Little Green Floor Cleaner. With six cats, a five year old and a particularly messy 20 month old, having access to a spot cleaner was very nice indeed. We don't have carpeting but we do have area rugs and Jasper is fond of smooshing berries into them. I was impressed with the Little Green's performance, even on old stains. Better still, it features a sustainable design and packaging, PVC-free tanks and hose. Even the formula is clean and green! Best of all is the fact that the Little Green is made from recycled plastics: If every Walmart customer bought a Little Green machine, it would be like recycling two million bags of trash*.
