Maybe you would like to try the Flower Balm, a tingling massage lotion that smells like minty citrus and warms wherever you rub it in, be it achy shoulders or engorged nethers. (Bear in mind it should not be used with latex products.) If you're not feeling very frisky, I also find it makes a pretty spectacular cuticle creme…

Kodak Zi6: Take a Movie, It'll Last Longer

Possibly the most coveted piece of swag from BlogHer last year was the Kodak Zi6 pocket video camera that was featured in the to-die-for SocialLuxe Lounge goody bags. I got a pink one, which is awesome because it pretty much ensures that Bob won't try to steal it. Roo, on the other hand, monopolizes the thing whenever I try to film her with it. It's compact (about the size of a 1st gen iPod) and easy enough for a kid to use, plus it runs on rechargeable AA batteries and comes with a handy wall charger so you never run out of juice. Its screen is big (2.4") and bright enough to see what you're filming even in bright sunlight.

What's really great about the Zi6 is that you push a button to release a USB toggle that allows you to upload your videos without hassling with cords. It comes with proprietary Kodak software that is supposedly very easy to use (and allows you to splice in music and still photos) but I didn't install it because my Mac automatically uploads the videos to iPhoto. And it's not Mac-compatible. You can also use it to take still photos but I think the Zi6 is particularly handy for capturing kids who are a little too fast for still photos! And for documenting every new song they learn:

Disclosure: I received the Kodak Zi6 digital video camera in a goody bag, in case you didn't read the first sentence. I was not asked to write about it but I think it's pretty cool. I hear the newer Kodak Zi8 is even cooler. I can't vouch for that although it looks pretty sleek and possibly more intuitive. But it doesn't come in pink!

Putting the Ninja to Work

I know some of you have been waiting to hear more about the Ninja Master Prep that I was lucky enough to be whisked away to NYC to see being demonstrated this time last month. I received a truckload of boxes from Euro-Pro a couple of weeks ago and have been slowly but surely trying everything out so I can tell you about the products from my own point of view. I had kind of hoped everything would trickle in over a couple of months but instead I received three vacuum cleaners, two steamers and, of course, the Ninja Master Prep all at once! I was a bit overwhelmed initially but I have finally gotten the chance to use everything so I will write up my thoughts soon.

First off, the Ninja Master Prep. We've used it several times already to make pesto (using the end-of-season garden basil) and salsa verde (using the end-of-season garden tomatillos and tomatoes). I finally remembered to take some pictures while using it to make zucchini/banana muffins for Roo's class. (I am on the healthy snack committee and the kids especially like home-baked goods, even if we use whole grains and less sugar!)

If you're like me, you are probably wondering why it's called the Ninja. After using it at home several times, I think I know. Witness the twin blades of doom:

These things are razor sharp and come apart from the shaft for easy cleaning. I think they look a bit like ninja throwing stars when they're assembled and they certainly do their job efficiently. The zucchini from our garden didn't stand a chance when pitted against the Ninja Master Prep:

Nor did these walnuts:

In fact, when you're using the Ninja Master Prep, you have to be careful to use short pulses instead of pushing down on the button because it will completely pulverize whatever you put into it within a few short seconds. Since I didn't want walnut meal, I only pulsed once or twice.

One of the things that I especially like about the Ninja Master Prep is that the motor is housed in a unit that you attach to the tops of the chopping containers. It does not power on unless the lids are locked and everything is in its place, which is comforting since the blades are incredibly sharp. I haven't been a victim of the Ninja yet but Bob managed to slice his hand a bit, I think when he was pulling the blades out to rinse. You'd think he'd know better than to mess with a Ninja!

The Ninja Master Prep made the zucchini totally disappear into lovely moist muffins. I peeled them before chopping so there wouldn't be any sign for the green-phobic six and under set. See? They just look like normal banana-walnut muffins:

I like the versatility that the Ninja Master Prep offers with its two cup bowl and 48 oz pitcher. Having two containers that you can attach the motor unit to means you can work on different items at the same time without stopping to wash and dry vessels. The pitcher has a hinged spout lid which is nice because it can vent when you're blending hot things. It's hard to beat the Ninja's ease of cleaning since the blade assembly comes out and apart for hand or machine dishwashing. I also like the fact that it comes with storage lids that you can pop off if you decide not to use everything all at once. Replacement parts are readily available, so you could also stock up on extra bowls or pitchers if you do a lot of chopping and blending. The price is also pretty reasonable: $59.85, including shipping.

Disclosure: I received a Ninja Master Prep to try out and my flight and one night of hotel accomodations were paid for during the NYC launch event. However, Euro-Pro has not asked me to write this review and has nothing to do with my opinions. If the Ninja sucked, I would say so.

Crystal Clear

I received an amazing cake serving set from Accent Furniture Direct that even makes my feeble baking attempts look pretty spiffy:

Unfortunately, the rounded dome cake server I received is not on their website anymore but there is a similar design available. The William Bounds - Grainware Serving Necessities Cake Plate with Dome is a more formal looking serving piece that would be perfect for presenting fancy bakery cakes.

I am really intrigued by the entire William Bounds Grainware collection which looks like elegant partyware, both sleek, modern glassware and traditional cut crystal, but it is actually incredibly practical since it is made of easy-care acrylic. I can think of a dozen things that would look better just by virtue of being placed upon these Grainware Pedestals!

I am not a very prolific hostess but I am hoping my mom will buy a bunch of William Bounds Grainware pieces since she entertains a lot indoors and out.

Disclosure: I received the cake dome in the first photo and was asked to write my opinions of it. I was not paid to bake the cake pictured, thank goodness!

Handmade Toys

Bob took this great video of Jasper helping to pick up toys in the yard yesterday. He's very diligent. (I wish he was so conscientious about cleaning up his toys indoors, too!)

For a better look at the toys, all of which Bob made out of wood for Roo and Jasper over the last few years, check out his new blog: Robot on Holiday.

As a sidenote, Jasper has refused to wear anything but greaser jeans and this car hoodie (zipped all the way up!) for the past week or two. Luckily I've been able to snag them and wash them overnight a couple of times. I am amazed at how much he cares about what he's wearing these days… he's only two. I can't imagine how difficult he's going to be to dress in a couple of years.

Super Fruit!

My mom brought these over the other day. What do you think they are?

They look like olives or opaque grapes but they're actually… kiwi berries! (Note the quarter on the bowl for scale.) Each berry looks and tastes like a miniature kiwi fruit. You don't have to peel them, because there is no fuzzy skin to worry about. Kiwi berries have smooth, edible skin.

These are not merely a novelty fruit. They taste great and pack the same dense nutrients that their bigger, fuzzy-skinned cousins do: antioxidants (vitamins A, B2, B6, C, E and folic acid as well as carotenoids and flavonoids), insoluble and soluble fiber, zero cholesterol, very little fat (about 1g per serving from the seeds), and a wealth of minerals (more potassium than bananas!). Plus they're cute and little, so you can coerce most kids into trying them… Roo and Jasper wolfed them down in a couple of minutes. We're going to have to look into planting one of the vines in our yard since it's apparently frost-resistant. I would imagine homegrown kiwi berries would be even more delicious!

Battling Cold and Flu Season, Naturally

The swine flu epidemic has finally hit home. Well, not literally, thankfully. One of the elementary teachers from Roo's school was diagnosed and so were a couple of our neighbors. I suspect it's only a matter of time before H1N1 comes knocking at our door. That doesn't mean we'll give in, though!

Aside from being slightly more stringent than usual about the kids' washing their hands, we haven't done much to avoid the virus this year. We haven't been vaccinated although if our county got the H1N1 vaccine in stock, I suspect even Bob would take it- and he's usually anti-vaccinations. I've been taking zinc supplements and trying to eat more fruit and drink healthy juices and so far I've been able to keep healthy. I've heard that oscillococcinum is a good way to keep colds and flu at bay. Has anyone tried it?

One2One Network has teamed up with Boiron, the world leader in homeopathy, to offer a $1 off coupon so you can try their new homeopathic medicines for kids: Children's Oscillococcinum, Children's Coldcalm Pellets or Children's Chestal.

Jasper's signature illness is a runny nose and Roo's is a deep, hacking cough. I am looking forward to trying these natural products out and sharing my thoughts on how they work. I am hoping very well, indeed…

Disclosure: One2One Network asked me to write about the Boiron homeopathic children's product and link to the $1 off coupon. In exchange, I will receive samples of all three products mentioned and be entered into a drawing to win one of three $100 gift cards. (Just in time for me to get something I really want for my birthday!)

The party hashtag will be #zoneperfect and there will be prizes and samples of ZonePerfect Indulgence Nutrition Squares. Follow @ZonePerfect and @superdumb or use this special Tweetgrid to keep up on the action!

Full disclosure: As part of Collective Bias, an online community group, I received a sample box of each flavor to try. The Caramel Toffee was probably my favorite although I did, indeed, like them all. It took some serious willpower not to snarf up a whole box in one sitting- they are that tasty! As a meal replacement or a nutritious snack, though, I think ZonePerfect Indulgence Nutrition Squares are a great way to stick to my diet plan while still feeling slightly naughty.

Sunny Day

The best part of the weather warming up again after a dark, dismal last week? I can wear the Birkenstock Gizeh sandals I won by writing a limerick over at Wanderlust and Lipstick (an excellent travel blog for women, btw). I think the passion flower pearlized leather goes awfully well with my hideous metallic olive toenail polish and boyfriend jeans…

Hollywood Cookie Diet

I'll admit it, I was skeptical when I was asked to review the Hollywood Cookie Diet. I mean, it's called the cookie diet, right? How could it possibly be anything other than a scam? How could you possibly eat cookies all day and lose weight? Of course, I also immediately agreed to try it just because it's called the Hollywood Cookie Diet. I am nothing if not a glamorous, a-list celebrity wannabe with a sweet tooth.

Each box contains a dozen individually-wrapped cookies that are high in protein and fiber. The idea is that you substitute one cookie for breakfast and one for lunch, then eat a sensible dinner. You may also eat a cookie in lieu of a snack. Each cookie is about 150 calories, so if you eat four cookies instead of two meals and two snacks per day, you can cut a lot of calorie intake. The Hollywood Cookie Diet website notes that if your normal calorie count is 3000 daily, by eating four cookies per day (600 calories) and a healthy dinner (800 calories) you could lose 15 lbs in one month! Those results sound pretty dramatic to me but the Hollywood Cookie Diet can certainly be used to jumpstart weight loss or maintain it, especially when combined with an exercise regimen.

As a mom, I appreciated the ease of keeping a pre-packaged cookie in my bag in case I forgot to eat a meal or was tempted by a diet-crashing snack while out of the house. I was impressed with how well they curbed my appetite. I didn't think a little cookie could hold me from one meal to the next but they really are very filling. Taste-wise, they're not significantly different than other pre-packaged cookies you might buy at a convenience store (think Grandma's). The Hollywood Cookie Diet is available in three flavors: chocolate chip, lemon and oatmeal raisin. All three are okay but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the lemon flavor, since it's not usually one of my favorites. They're not a match for my homemade cookies, of course, but they also don't pack the caloric burden that mine do from all the butter and sugar. I also don't feel a big need to eat as many as possible in one sitting, so that's a plus!

At around $20 for a box of 12, the Hollywood Cookie Diet is a bit on the pricey side but comparable to other meal replacement options. I thought it would be more convenient to buy them packaged in one week supplies, which would be 28 cookies, but I think the sticker shock might scare potential customers off. One thing that is nice is that the Hollywood Cookie Diet seems to be widely available. I saw them on the shelf at my corner drugstore. I'm not sure I would keep them on hand all the time but they are great to kick off your diet or to keep yourself in line for a big event.

Full disclosure: I received two boxes to try the Hollywood Cookie Diet out at home.

Kindergarten Mugshot

Some kids smile for the photographer, providing their parents with a perfect keepsake for posterity.

Mine? Not so much.

Geez, I'm not even sure Roo's grandparents would want this pouting at them from a frame on the wall. Last year, you could see her underwear in the class picture and now she's the perfect picture of kindergarten angst. I can only imagine what her senior portraits are going to look like…

Naked Nure by Royal Ranch

Naked Nure is full of poop. Well, actually it IS poop. Llama poop, to be exact, made into 100% all-natural "teabags" to brew up nutrient-rich compost tea for your garden or indoor plants. There are two varieties available for purchase, both in handmade reuseable cloth bags that are great for gift-giving. The indoor bags are smaller and contain six teabags made of a compostable paper. They will brew about 12-15 gallons of compost tea for your plants.

The outdoor bags are made of heavy-duty burlap with a sturdy denim handle and a zipper closure. This one will make more than 20-25 gallons of tea for your garden. See how "clean" the llama poop looks? It is very low-odor as manure goes.

First you steep the bags in water:

We did a couple of the indoor tea bags in a barrel (above) and the outdoor bag in the trailer bucket (below).

After a couple of days, the tea is rich and dark:

(The floating pellets in the barrel are because we ripped one of the tea bags.)

Bob was really into the reflective quality the Naked Nure developed while it was brewing. I won't tell you how many self portraits he took in it. Dork.

The garden seemed to enjoy Naked Nure! Can't beat a non-chemical fertilizer. Especially one that comes from such adorable creatures.

Naked Nure is made by the fine folks who operate the Royal Ranch and Royal Roost B&B in Bailey, Colorado. Tom and Judy Jeute are the proprietors. Aside from producing Naked Nure, their llamas are also trained rescue animals and lead wilderness hiking expedition with Royal Llama Adventures. The first photo shown is the very handsome Marcel the llama participating in a royal llama wedding! And the one below is Judy with Marcel and Jasper the llamas. (Someday I hope my Jasper will be able to meet his llama counterpart…)

Now is the time to stock up on Naked Nure! Everything is 50% off. Indoor Naked Nure is only $6 and Outdoor Naked Nure is just $11. These would make a surprisingly attractive and unusual gift for your favorite gardener this holiday season!

Disclosure: We received two bags of Naked Nure to sample in order to write this review. I left it to my husband (the green thumb in the family) and it seriously took all summer to coax these pictures out of him. Sorry, Judy! He really likes the product and actually wants to check out the Royal Ranch sometime for a family trip. No joke! And I've always secretly wanted a llama. I think we're zoned for one…
