(New) Mother's Day Giveaway from Belli Skincare and Friends

is partnering with some fabulous friends to give one new mom the Mother's Day gift package she *really* wants! Tomorrow – May 3rd, you can get 20% off online purchases using code BLIMOM20 and enter to win a prize valued at more than $700 featuring items from Belli and their partners Pregnancy & Newborn Magazine, Belabumbum, Chewbeads, Goumi, MobyWrap, Guava Family, and Ovia.

I'm well past my babymaking phase (phew!) but I appreciated a lot of these brands when I was deep in the throes of new mommyhood. In fact, I remember being positively wowed by Belli's Stretchmark Minimizing Cream after having Jasper. And I love Belabumbum's soft, sexy loungewear and undies, which thankfully go beyond nursing bras. I could LIVE in their Copacabana collection,  if anyone feels the need to get me bras and boyshorts in every color combination…

Chuao Chocolatier’s Endless Summer Sweepstakes

I am a big fan of Chuao Chocolatier's exotic flavors. I'm also awfully fond of World Market. And Summertime. In fact, the only thing I don't like about those three things together is melty messes on my fingers. Yum!

Go enter the Chuao Endless Summer Sweepstakes.

In accordance to the FTC Guidelines and the WOMMA Code of Ethics, I am disclosing that I have received product samples from Chuao in the past. No compensation was provided. All opinions are, as usual, entirely my own.

Chuao - Naturally Good Chocolate

I know I've been on a bit of a fitness kick lately but let me assure you, I still have my cravings. What's nice is when you find something to indulge in that is actually worth the calories. Chuao Chocolatier offers decadent artisanal confections in unusual flavor combinations that will pique the adventurous palate. I received the firecracker (dark chocolate with smoked chipotle, sea salt and popping candy), honeycomb (dark chocolate with chewy bits of caramelized honey) and potato chip (milk chocolate with sea salt kettle chips) which I immediately hid from the children.

While it's hard to pick a favorite of the three, the firecracker was just amazing. Spicy, crunchy, effervescent. If you're going to try and content yourself with just a block or two of chocolate, you want to make it count, right? This is a good one. They also make a maple bacon bar that I am dying to try and, unsurprisingly, Chuao is all ready for Valentine's Day with all sorts of prettily-adorned goodies. Who wouldn't be thrilled to receive Chuao's Sweetheart Box, a heart-shaped vessel filled with 22 aphrodesiac-laced bon bons? Mmm!

Chuao chocolate bars are available at Target stores nationwide.

Like Chuao on Facebook for a chance to win a year's supply of chocolate:

California Wine Club - Holiday Gifts Simplified (Giveaway)

I already told you about my experience with the California Wine Club but my December shipment arrived, so I wanted to write about those, too. This month's selected vineyard is Daniel Gehrs Wines, hailing from Los Olivos in California's Santa Ynez Valley. The bottles came festively adorned in holiday foil, 2011 Chenin Blanc in silver and 2009 Merlot in red.

The Daniel Gehrs Merlot was really, really easy to drink, so I am not surprised that it has won multiple gold medals. It was fruity and smooth and paired well with beef and even turkey. The Daniel Gehrs Chenin Blanc has a crisp tartness that I enjoyed. It was great with spicy Thai food. It was interesting to read Daniel Gehr's history in the issue of Uncorked that came with my subscription. He has been working in the wine industry since 1974, up and down the central coast region. He claims the Chenin Blanc as one of his personal favorites. Gehr says that the Chenin Blanc is unusually long-lived for a white wine, since they usually have relatively short life spans.

If there are still some names with question marks next to them on your shopping list, visit www.cawineclub.com for fun and unique holiday gift wine subscriptions starting at just $49.95, including shipping. You can also buy wines by the case and save substantially on the per-bottle retail price. Note: Ground Shipping Deadline is December 12th.  Any orders placed after Dec 12 incur expedited air charges for Christmas deliveries.

The California Wine Club is holding a special holiday contest for blog readers. You could win some fabulous prizes, including:
  • One of four, Three Month Wine Club memberships (A $150 value you can give as a gift, or keep for yourself)
  • One of 50 handy Two Bottle Wine Totes ($25 value)
  • One of 50 Red Tulip Music wine country CD's ($15 value)

Follow California Wine Club on Twitter

In accordance to the FTC Guidelines and the WOMMA Code of Ethics, I am disclosing that I received a two-month subscription to the California Wine Club in order to facilitate this review, which was made possible by Mom Spark Media. As usual, all thoughts are my own.

Colby Community College Virtual Assistant Scholarship

You might have noticed that I've been contemplating re-entering the job market. Times are tough everywhere and it's hard to get back into the work cycle after being a stay at home mom. I mean that quite literally, since my resume has some gaping holes for the years I've spent without formal work experience, I look really sketchy on paper. Here in Wichita, it definitely seems like the people doing the hiring are more interested in where you've been than what you can do, so I've been wondering if I should take some classes just to refresh me on how to work.

Colby Community College in western Kansas is holding a contest for to two bloggers to win an online scholarship for their Virtual Assistant certification. That's 32 credit hours, gratis! It seems like a good way to stay at home a little more productively while setting the work wheels in motion.
Have you thought about becoming a virtual assistant or have you used one in the past? I'm curious to hear your thoughts.
For more information on the Virtual Assistant scholarship promotion, check out Colby Community College's Facebook page. You can also Tweet using #ColbyCCVA and tell others how they can apply as well by using this link http://bit.ly/ColbyCCVA
If Virtual Assistant doesn't appeal to you, they are also offering a $1,500 Veterinary Technology Scholarship towards your online AAS degree…

In accordance to the FTC Guidelines and the WOMMA Code of Ethics, I am disclosing that this post was written as my entry into the scholarship contest. No compensation was provided. All opinions are, as usual, entirely my own.

My Disney Memories

My 8th grade boyfriend moved from Hawaii to Southern California, which of course was a major tragedy in the way only teenaged girls can whine about. Mark was a total skatepunk, with goofy charm and a carrot-colored mohawk. Since I spent my summers split between grandparents in SoCal and New Jersey, I knew I'd be able to see him then.

Neither of us was old enough to drive so my uncle dropped me off at Disneyland to meet Mark. He still shakes his head at how we looked back then. Anyway, we bought our tickets and were going inside when we were accosted by Disney security. They said that we couldn't go into the park because Mark's hair and studded jacket would be distracting to other guests. Seriously? I was worried he would mouth off and we'd be stranded at the gate for the whole day but eventually the guard said it would be okay if he checked his jacket into a locker. We grumbled but did it anyway and ended up having a good time.

The last time I was at DisneyWorld, there was some kind of goth convention going on with surly teens kitted out in Tim Burton-esque garb. It made me laugh, remembering almost being kicked out of Disneyland for a biker jacket. Especially since half the Disney-branded tween clothes at Target have shredded details and studs. Ah, how times change.

In accordance to the FTC Guidelines and the WOMMA Code of Ethics, I am disclosing that BodyLogicMD is offering a contest to win a trip for 4 to Disney World (hotel and airfare included) and by writing about my Disney memories, I will be entered. I hope I win! No compensation has been provided. As usual, all opinions are my own.

Frankenweenie Monstrous Sweepstakes

Oh, I am so excited for Frankenweenie. I am imagining it as Tim Burton directing a Castle Films version of Pet Sematary. The Vampire Cat is adorable! I mean, spooky. Very spooky!

If you love Halloween and Disney (and, seriously, who doesn't?), you'll want to enter the Frankenweenie Monstrous Sweepstakes. You could win a trip for four to experience the spookiest time of the year at Disneyland Resort, including The Art of Frankenweenie exhibit at the newly expanded Disney California Adventure theme park. For a limited time, Disney guests will be treated to a special 4D extended preview of the film at the Muppets Vision 3D Theater before Frankenweenie comes to theaters in 3D October 5th!

Enter online at www.disney.com/frankenweeniesweeps or text EDGAR to DISNEY (347639) to enter for a chance to win. *Msg and data rates may apply. If you’re under 18, get your parents’ permission first.*

Embarrassingly, I have never even been to DCA. I spent my summers in Orange County until I was about 15 and went to Disneyland pretty frequently but my kids have only been to Disney World. Bad mommy. You should enter but I hope we win!

Get Spinning with Rafflecopter

I love giving things away on my blog but I must admit that it is a gigantic pain in the butt. You have to track and verify entries, randomly select winners, track them down and update. Constantly and on a set schedule. Time management is not my strong suit, so this is often problematic. I've seen a bunch of "solutions" to online giveaways pop up over the years but when Rafflecopter launched last year, there was a collective sigh of relief from bloggers – and contest addicts– everywhere.

In an effort to spread the word about its new, improved (and still FREE!) version, Rafflecopter is holding a special giveaway through the month of January. Enter via the widget below for a chance to win an iPad 2 or one of several Kindle Fires. You will not believe how simple it is to enter!

GameStop "Jingle in Your Pocket" at Mom Spark

GameStop is sponsoring a crazy contest over at Mom Spark to promote their trade-in program this holiday season. It's not only used games and consoles that you can trade: you can also bring in your old iPods, iPhones and iPads for cash or store credit.

It would be awfully nice to win the $1000 gift card, don't you think? Roo definitely thinks so– she's already picked out the first thing she'd buy…

In accordance to the FTC Guidelines and the WOMMA Code of Ethics, I am disclosing that I have written this for a chance to win the aforementioned gift card.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own, as usual.

Just Ask Bucket List Getaway

This is my entry in the Just Ask Bucket List Getaway Giveaway. Just Ask offers a breast and ovarian cancer screening and is encouraging people to share 15 things that I want to enjoy in my lifetime as a reminder to be aware of my health. Want to enter? Head over to TodaysMama.com to get the details.

1.     Stop being merely creative and actually start creating.

2.     Learn how to sew properly. If you ever saw the pants I pegged in high school or anything I have supposedly mended for the kids, you will know what I mean when I say "properly."

3.     Live by the ocean. Ideally in Hawaii, on the Windward side of Oahu. Take advantage of the proximity.

4.     Use a DSLR with precision and skill instead of on auto.

5.     Take a sleeper train across Canada.

6.     Ride a motorcycle without burning myself. Yes, there's a story. No, I'm not telling it to you.

7.     Take the kids to Okinawa with my mom and see where she grew up. Get to know the family we still have there.

8.     Speak Japanese well enough to converse. Preferably in Okinawa with aforementioned relatives.

9.     Visit my friend Sylvia in Barcelona.

10.    Have a lipstick color named in my honor.

11.    Learn to surf. Seriously. I know one of the prizes for this whole contest is a trip to Las Olas Surf Camp but this has been on my list for a while. I grew up in Hawaii and never learned to surf. Okay, I did manage to successfully windsurf once or twice, but that is the extent of my expertise. Pretty sad.

12.    Ride a horse.

13.    Transfer platforms from Blogger to Wordpress. This sounds minor but for some reason I've been stalling on it.

14.    Write one good song. Music and lyrics.

15.    Never stand in Roo or Jasper's way. Let them become their own people and be proud of them, no matter what.

Kmart Backyard Makeover Sweepstakes

Have you seen Kmart Outdoor Living? The mini-site compiles some great summer backyard makeovers that Social Fabric community members have been working on over the past few month. They run the gamut from simple additions (a grill, some new cushions) to patio conversions worthy of a spread in your favorite home magazine. I've been surprised and impressed with the selection and design that seems to be pumping out of the new Kmart: great brand names, super values, and newfangled style.

Another reason to get excited is the Kmart Backyard Makeover Sweepstakes: like the Kmart Fan page through July 20, 2011 and fill out the entry form to be eligible to win amazing prizes. One grand prize winner will receive a backyard makeover valued at $4,000 from Kmart with a design consultation from lifestyle blogger and DIY style expert Courtney Milton from French Country Cottage. Three randomly-selected weekly winners will each receive a $250 Kmart gift card. Enter now!

If you have young kids, you might also want to visit Kmart's Playdate Place for articles and toy reviews that can help you plan the best get-togethers for your family.

In accordance to the FTC Guidelines and WOMMA Code of Ethics, I am disclosing that I have been compensated as a campaign leader for Collective Bias but I wasn't asked to post this information– I just thought you might want to enter. All opinions are, as usual, strictly my own.

Red Robin Kids' Cookoff - Vote Donovan!

This time next week, I'll be in Denver watching ten aspiring burgermakers compete in the Red Robin Kids' Cookoff. One of the contestants, twelve year old Donovan, is from Wichita and I was invited to be a correspondent at the event to cheer him on. I am pleased to say that Donovan is currently the leader in the online voting with his Mt Vesuvius Burger, a sweet and spicy concoction featuring his homemade Lava Sauce, plus crumbled blue cheese and bacon. Mmm, bacon.

We had the pleasure of meeting Donovan's family and having dinner with them at our local Red Robin, on the Waterfront in NE Wichita the other night. He is a really cool kid!

Donovan likes math and science best in school, although he's also very good at geography– hence the "Mt. Vesuvius" reference. He plays viola with the Wichita Youth Symphony and composes music. He's also a lot of fun to be around. I wanted Roo to interview him but she was pretending to be shy. Jasper, not so much.

Here's a video of Donovan from local channel KWCH:

Several locals have already asked for Donovan's burger, so hopefully it will be added to the regular menu! Be sure to vote for Donovan every day. The whole Red Robin Kids' Cookoff will be broadcast live online on Thursday, December 9th at 10am MST. If you'd like to tune in, sign up for the webcast.

Disclosure: My travel and lodging are being provided by Red Robin in exchange for my services as an event correspondent.

MIA

You might have noticed my lack of posting over the weekend. Yes, I enjoyed the holiday with Roo and Jasper, even with single parent duty since Bob's on Horn Island. But, no, keeping the kids off of each other isn't my excuse. My desktop computer crashed in the middle of me finally backing everything up, potentially losing all of my data including all the photos since Jasper was about a year old. Whoops.

I hoofed it over to Haddock (the Wichita version of an Apple store) and left my poor iMac in their capable hands over the weekend. And I just haven't felt like blogging without it, even though potentially I could do so on the old laptop, albeit more slowly. I think I'm afraid of a technology curse. I plugged my iPhone into the laptop and it promptly lost half of my apps. Sigh. Anyway, the tech guy called to tell me the data's all there but he was going to mess with some other things so hopefully I'll get it back tomorrow. Cross your fingers for me. Apparently I miss my computer. How lame is that?

Okay, divert your eyes from the embarrassing geek love and check this out:

Although you probably shouldn't enter, since my chances of winning would be better that way. Hmm.

Also, my old workmate Kevin is trying to win a screenwriting contest, so if you have a YouTube account and can like his rather eloquent summation, I would appreciate it. Perhaps if he wins this trip to LA and becomes a famous scribe, he will stop assaulting me with Aldo Nova stuff on Facebook. You know what, I'll just embed the thing here and you can check it out. I think it's a good concept, although obviously the crazy mom should be Japanese. Duh.

How was your Memorial Day?

Ultimate Blog Party 2010

Ultimate Blog Party 2010

Hey there! Thanks for stopping by… as in real life, I have a zillion things going on and haven't managed to get things quite ready for visitors. Please don't mind the mess! (The only reason I was listed under Not-so-family-friendly blogs, by the way, is because I occasionally review adult toys. And in real life I have a bit of a pottymouth. And because there were fewer listings there, so I thought I might get more curious visitors…)

I've been blogging for about three years, since I was pregnant with my second child. I am married to an artist and we live in the middle of Kansas with six cats and a basset hound puppy. We have two kids who are pretty much the centers of our universe.

Roo is six and in kindergarten. She alternates between being a girlie-girl and digging around in dirt for worms and other creepy crawlies.

Jasper is two and obsessed with robots and Star Wars. He also possesses the cat-like grace of Bruce Lee and will most likely be a ninja when he grows up.

The Ultimate Blog Party was one of the first online "carnivals" I participated in, hopping from blog to blog and "meeting" other bloggers. I'll admit it, initially I was lured in by the prizes but I found a ton of blogs that were really funny and insightful, too. Over the past couple of years, I have been lucky enough to make wonderful friends through my blog and even meet many of them in person. We've hung out at conferences and other blogger events and I can honestly say that everyone has been just as cool in person as I expected from their online personas. Thank goodness! It would not be an exaggeration to say that this community is both vast and welcoming… if you ever have questions about parenting or recipes or computers, there is always someone who will help you out.

If you have the time on your party-hopping dance card, check out my current giveaways. I usually have a couple going on, so please stop back after the party's over, too…

Click the button at the top to go to the main UBP hub and find a million other blogs to visit! Did I mention there were prizes? The one I am crossing my fingers for is USC 17, the Apple GC from CmomGo although who wouldn't want the Grand Prize, a Toshiba Laptop!

Wash Them Grow with Suave Kids (possible giveaway!)

The Suave Kids® Wash Them Grow campaign encourages you to recognize your child's bath time routine as an opportunity to teach, nurture and transition your child through the stages of growth and cleansing. When your child washes with Suave® Kids, you'll experience the joy of milestone bath time moments with every single fun-loving splash, no matter what the stage of childhood.

To kick-off the campaign, Suave Kids® is launching the Wash Them Grow Sweepstakes, with chances to win awesome weekly prizes of a Family e-Keepsake Kit (including a video camera, laptop and digital camera) and the Grand Prize of a family vacation to Orlando! Simply head over to WashThemGrow.com to play a fun online trivia game and receive an automatic entry into the Suave Kids® Wash Them Grow Sweepstakes. You can enter daily from January 18th until February 22 and literally watch your baby grow online as you progress through the milestones of clean!

Because they know how sensitive your child's skin is, Suave Kids® has developed a made-for-kids body wash for every stage of childhood. Suave Kids® Moisturizing Body Wash is perfect for moms transitioning away from baby bath products, with its rich lather and soft scent while the Berry and Strawberry Body Washes are fruity fun for older kids learning to wash themselves. Our favorite is the Suave Kids® Free and Gentle Body Wash which is mild and dye-free so it's safe for sensitive skin like Roo and Jasper's. Oh, who am I kidding? They love the Strawberry Body Wash, too!

Disclosure: we received samples of the four new body washes mentioned in return for mentioning this contest as part of a MomSelect blog tour. The blogger who drives the most traffic to the sweepstakes will win a year's supply of Suave Kids® products -- for herself AND 10 of her readers! The winning blogger will also receive a $100 gift card to Build-A-Bear Workshop.

Please click on over and enter the Suave Kids® Wash Them Grow contest so we can both have a chance at winning!

Strong and Happy

Roo was totally irritating me at the grocery store the other day, demanding to buy yogurt. She always begs for yogurt but leaves half of the cup so I usually don't buy individual cups anymore, preferring to dole out a little from a larger container and chopping up some fruit to stir in. Somehow she's gotten the message that yogurt is "teenager food" and so she wants it. (She is very interested in the idea of being a teenager, since apparently all teenagers do is talk to or about boys and kiss. Hmm.) Anyway, I remembered that 5 Minutes for Mom is partnering with Yoplait Kids for a "Strong and Happy" Drawing Contest. Their yogurt cups are smaller than the adult sizes so even my daughter of petite appetite can eat the whole shebang in one sitting. Roo promised to draw a picture representing how yogurt helps her be strong and happy:

Obviously, yogurt makes our entire family strong and happy. And heart-headed, which can't be bad. I dig the high heels and piggy noses on the characters from the Olivia series of books and cartoons… Pigs must like yogurt, too!

Check out the "Strong and Happy" Drawing Contest for your chance to win $1,000 to use towards classes (including sports) and/or education material for your child(ren).

Sealy Posturepedic Giveaway

Amanda is giving away a brand new Sealy Posturepedic mattress in your choice of size! These mattresses are designed to eliminate the pressure points that cause tossing and turning. I could certainly use a better night's sleep- how about you?

If I won, I would probably have to get a nice mattress for Roo's bunk bed or Jasper's big boy bed since their current mattresses are pretty lackluster.

Cooking Challenge: Chicken Green Chile

I was asked me to come up with a holiday entree recipe using Challenge Butter in order to promote their "A Taste of the West" Sweepstakes which is going on through the end of the year. You could win a 7-day/6-night trip for 4 people to the incredible Mountain Sky Guest Ranch in Montana’s Paradise Valley, just North of Yellowstone National Park or an $850 kitchen package from Spice Islands and OXO!

Challenge Butter is made from 100% real cream from growth hormone-free dairy cows. I actually had some in my fridge already, even though it's not usually available in my region because my mom got it for me at the Air Force Commissary! I like using it because it gives a nice flavor and texture to baked goods and makes the creamiest mashed potatoes.

For the recipe challenge, I received samples of Challenge Butter in traditional sticks and a new, spreadable (courtesy of canola oil) tub along with an adorable OXO Pop container, whisk, and four jars from Spice Islands (Beau Monde Seasoning, Ground Chipotle Pepper, Smoked Paprika, and Fennel Seeds). Bob and I decided to saute mushrooms, garlic and onions in a bit of the stick butter then added that to shredded leftover rotisserie chicken before adding the spices (minus the fennel seeds) to taste. We added some tomatillo sauce, leftover corn, chopped green chiles and two cans of cannellini beans. Then Bob had the genius suggestion of splashing in some white wine. A little odd, perhaps, for a Mexican-y dish but we were out of beer. And it was seriously delicious! We ate it over some leftover rice and it was hearty and warming. The Ground Chipotle Pepper and Smoked Paprika gave it a subtle depth that was really, really nice.

Not the prettiest dish in the world but definitely a tasty one!

Disclosure: we received the butter, spices and cooking tools listed above in return for creating this recipe and blogging about the Challenge Dairy "A Taste of the West" Sweepstakes. I will also be entered into a contest to win a $100 gift card. Many other blogs are participating in this challenge and featuring their own recipes, check them out:
