I've been an eBay member since 1997. It's hard to imagine but I received a congratulatory email from them recently on our 15th anniversary. In a way, eBay was my gateway drug to online shopping. I keep multiple searches on hand and buy most of the kids' and my own clothes there. I've only had two iffy experiences in all that time and both were down to shifty sellers and were resolved via PayPal. It would be an understatement to say that I'm a fan.
Now that mobile technology has become an integral part of online shopping, eBay keeps pushing the envelope with their app offerings. The main eBay mobile app provides an on-the-go shopping portal as well as allowing you to snap pictures to post items for sale wherever you are. If you're a procrastinating seller like me, this is invaluable because it saves so much time with uploading photos and editing and writing descriptions. The RedLaser app is fantastic to use wherever you shop to scan barcodes, QR codes, UPC codes and more to find the best deals on eBay, online or in your local area. I also really like using RedLaser to scan items that I already have at home and need to restock, so I can find the lowest prices.
If you're a gearhead, the eBay Motors app will be your best friend. Keep track of the parts you're looking for by opening your own Garage: just enter your VIN numbers from your cars or motorcycles and you can customize searches to your own needs. You can even keep a Dream Vehicle search if you're looking for the one that got away.
My personal favorite is the eBay Fashion app. You can search designer trends and find similar styles for a bargain on eBay, peruse weekly Style Story features, or use the eBay Image Swatch to snap photos of your inspirations and match them to listings on eBay. Or feed your fashion obsession with the limited-time sales in the Fashion Vault. Love!!!

Bob made me this necklace for my birthday, isn't it amazing? Hand-forged steel, double-linked.
Our friend Collin let me pick one of his very cool leather bracelets. I was debating between a couple and Roo decided that I needed this one, probably because she digs purple:
I also bought some shoes for myself on eBay (thanks, Dad!):
We took the kids to see Puss in Boots as a little after-school surprise on my birthday. Good stuff.
eBay Group Gifts use Buy It Now and PayPal to create a hassle-free way for multiple givers to chip in for a for a single gift recipient. No more trying to squeeze pennies from other parents in the carpool lane for a teacher gift, now you can do it all via email. Or, better yet, via Facebook Connect. It seems like eBay Group Gifts would also be a great way to get the most out of communal gift cards: if you have roommates, for example, you could pool a bunch of $50 gift cards together on a shared big-budget item like a TV. I can't help you with who gets to keep it when you move out, though…
Disclosure: In accordance to the FTC Guidelines and WOMMA Code of Ethics, I am disclosing that I received an eBay gift card to try out using eBay Group Gifts. My opinions are, however, entirely my own- as usual.
I chose to spring an Unwrap Attack on my friend Kristin. She was one of my very first blog friends and has always been incredibly supportive of me and my blog. We've met in person a couple of times but last year our daughters got to meet at Disney Social Media Moms Celebration and were fast friends.
Kristin was an obvious choice for my Unwrap Attack! I asked her husband's advice on what gift would make her head explode, and he suggested a telephoto zoom lens for the DSLR she got over the summer. I knew she was really into photography these days and eBay has tons of great deals on electronics, so it was the perfect surprise. Here's how her Unwrap Attack played out on Twitter yesterday:

My first official act of Elfiness was launching an Unwrap Attack on a blogger friend. I was hoping to post her reaction but since I found her a very special something on eBay, it is shipping from abroad and has not made its way to her home yet. I will keep you posted on her response when she receives it. Nope, I am not going to tell you who I chose as my first Unwrap Attack victim. Suffice it to say she was one of my first blog friends and mentors. No more hints, I don't want her surprise to be ruined!
If you'd like to enter to win a $100 gift card to eBay, and you're a US/Canadian citizen (aside from Quebec, pardonnez moi), send me a tweet using hashtag #unwrapattack and telling me your best Unwrap Attack story OR what gift would give you an Unwrap Attack this holiday season. One tweet per person through 12/15/2010. Please read the full rules below for more info.

Last week I got the most amazing opportunity. On Monday, I received an invitation to attend eBay's Love to Give Blogger Summit… on Thursday. In San Jose. (I live in Kansas.) Being an eBay member since 1997, there was no hesitation. Of course I wanted to go and find out more about what's going on at eBay.
The conference room we spent our day in was called Homestead. I'm thinking it had something to do with this decor, which presumably was sourced off eBay. (I am not sure that Pennsylvania Dutch is really Eileen or Sheila's scene.) In its 15 year history, eBay has grown like crazy. There are all sorts of phenomenal statistics to learn: 92 million active customers, $57 billion in merch sold last year, highest one-item sale ever was $4.9 million, Rachael's first eBay purchase was a car. I think all of us oohed and aahed most over the fact that every 3 seconds, a pair of shoes is sold on eBay. Whoa.
Predictably, there is a lot going on at eBay and we had an SEO tutorial from Dennis Goedegebuure, eBay's Director of SEO, a presentation by their corporate blogger, and a whirlwind overview of several new programs they're emphasizing for the holidays. The biggie is their Love to Give campaign, featuring the ever-enchanting Samantha Bee as a mom-correspondent probing the "Unwrap Attack" phenomenon in the holiday field of gift-giving battle. The Love to Give webisodes are all really funny but this one is my current favorite. Believe me when I tell you that it brought all of us in the Homestead room to tears with laughter and bizarro mommy hormones.
She is as hi-la-ri-ous in person as one might assume and also super sweet, being Canadian and all… Yes, we got to meet Samantha Bee, famous person from the world of traditional media. In fact, we got to film holiday greetings for our blogs with her and even ride in a prop sleigh. Thanks, eBay! (I will be posting that video when it gets edited, hopefully with some CGI help for my oddly speckled skin and wandering eyes. You should keep an eye out because there will be a very special holiday giveaway for my readers along with it. Be forewarned!) You might also want to create your own Unwrap Attack on Facebook. It's addictive.
Annie from the eBay Green Team (which was founded in 2005 over a pizza) introduced us to some really great new features that I suspect we will be taking advantage of this holiday season, eBay Instant Sale and The eBay Box. We all have drawers full of old phones and cameras gathering dust that could pad our PayPal accounts so we were particularly interested in the eBay Instant Sale, a program that aims to repurpose all of your cast-aside gadgets and gizmos, wipe them clean and pay you for them. Score! The eBay Box is a way to simply, eco-consciously ship goods. It's a super durable cardboard box designed to be reusable, over and over again, which is fantastic for a marketplace like eBay where many sellers are also buyers and vice-versa. It is also fantastically adorable:
Check out the extra-cute word bubbles where you can leave messages for the next user!
The eBay Box is currently in a pilot testing phase and is available in three sizes. Look for it shipping from your favorite sellers soon and learn more about its creation. I love the innovation behind this project and behind the whole eBay Green Team.
I am also pretty excited about eBay Group Gifts, which should come in handy this holiday season. They use Buy It Now and PayPal to create a hassle-free way for multiple givers to chip in for a for a single gift recipient. No more trying to squeeze pennies from other parents in the carpool lane for a teacher gift, now you can do it all via email. Or, better yet, via Facebook Connect. It seems like eBay Group Gifts would also be a great way for siblings to purchase one big present instead of little novelty items for their parents. Nice.
I'm going to have to write a separate post about the loveliness of our hotel, in an effort to keep this one relatively short and pertinent. And don't forget to come back in a week or so for a super-exciting Unwrap Attack and eBay giveaway for one of my readers!
Disclosure: In accordance to the FTC Guidelines and WOMMA Code of Ethics, I am disclosing that my time, travel and accommodations have been compensated by eBay for my participation in the Love to Give campaign. Although I have a material connection to eBay, any publicly stated opinions of eBay remain my own– formed over the last decade or so, trolling the web looking for cool stuff and finding much of it on eBay.
Okay, don't hate me. I was holding off on telling you all about the awesome Georgie World overstock sale on Ebay because I wanted to make sure I got the sweet deal on the 12 month stuff. As you might know, I love Georgie World and their rockin' clothes for the little guys, so I was psyched when Bethany, GW's owner/designer, told me she was going to list some overstocked inventory on Ebay. I left the house this morning, secure in the knowledge that there were no other bidders yet and it was at 99¢. I figured I could up my bid if I needed to when I got home. Well, as usual, I didn't make it home before the auction ended and someone outbid me. Argh.
Well, those of you with special boys who wear size 5 or 6 can still get a great deal here. This is my favorite tee (starting bid at $5!):
And what about this amazing ensemble, starting at only $27 for all three pieces-shirt/jack, pants and bitchin' Torino tee:
Moral: bid high and never leave the house. At least, until the auction is over.
Aah, sweet Ebay. Where else can you locate a 20+ year old She-Ra crystal palace and a gazillion action figures (including the coveted Spirit!) and make a three year old's face light up like it's her birthday every single day?
We made a couple of garage sale and thrift store excursions trying to find She-Ra stuff but came up woefully empty. Luckily, there's always the internet. Woo-hoo!
She really does have her own clothes. That fit. This is a tee we bought on Ebay (yes, again) for her upcoming baby brother. Hence the "little brother" logo. I tried to convince her it wouldn't work, but she is doggedly persistent as only a three year old can be. "See, it fits me so good!"
At least she didn't try to wear it to preschool. I think not being able to put her arms down all the way helped...
... so they can troll the internet for good deals on designer baby clothes on Ebay and contests where they can win iPods and such. Not to get busy with their hubbies, as is often suggested. My husband is actually cooking dinner as I write this, grumbling about whether or not I will get off the computer before 9. (I justify this by telling myself he is a morning YouTube junkie. I honestly can't tell you how annoyed I get at a pre-breakfast "just check this one out, real quick!" It is about as charming as Roo's bedtime lament of "just one more story, please! One more and I'll go straight to sleep!" Uh-huh. It's never just one, but at least I know where she gets it from.)
Here is a picture of Roo sporting some Ebay-derived finery:
(Her silver leather boots from the previous post are my all-time fave, though. Man, if those were just in my size, I would rule the world...)
Here's the awesome contest that inspired this post:
